Scattered light showers stretched along the Texas coast with widely scattered rain across the state. A Panhandle and South Plains storm warning expired with no damage, while thunder storms and several tornadoes affected the Plainview area.
A 13 member Texan goodwill group led by Mrs. Preston H. Dial arrived in Tokyo to start a two day stay. They will visit Korea Formosa Hong Kong the Philippines and Thailand before continuing their around the world journey. A Texas scholarship for an Oriental student is planned.
The Childress County Board, reorganized for the next school year, re elected Iley Compton as president. The board classifies county schools and sets grade configurations with Chil dress, Kirkland, Carey and Community Center teaching 12 grades while Tell school remains at eight. A county bus route was approved. other members include Arlie Key J C Smith Milburn Smith Bernie Steed and county superintendent Wade Kimbrough.
Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver vie for Florida's 28 convention votes as California looms with 68 votes. Florida marks southern sentiment in a statewide vote. Kentucky Alabama and Missouri also hold primaries and convention actions shape the Democratic race ahead of the California result. Symington earns Missouri endorsement as a possible dark horse candidate. Move On to California.
President Eisenhower asked Congress for a stepped up nuclear energy program for peaceful uses and weapons. He requested 112.5 million dollars for fiscal 1957 starting July 1 to fund design development testing and production of military propulsion reactors and accelerated civilian reactor development. The plan includes plant acquisition and construction to expand both military and civilian reactor efforts. The request splits 82.5 million in new funds for the Atomic Energy Commission and 30 million in unobligated funds. The majority of new funds cover operating expenses with part for plant and equipment.
Bill Elkins a Dallas builder and candidate for Congress at large spoke in Childress during a Panhandle and Plains tour opposing incumbent Martin Dies. He said Childress was his 108th county visit and planned to proceed to Wellington Shamrock Perryton and other northern towns.
The El Rancho Ponies of the American Legion meet Wellington tonight at 8 oclock in Fair Park Field. Manager Dick Risenhoover reports admission is 15 cents for students and 35 cents for adults.
The Senate moved to pass the largest highway program in U.S. history as discussions pressure for quick approval. A $37 billion plan would build a 42,500 mile network linking 42 state capitals with expanded federal state highway funding, while the House supports a $51.5 billion version. Differences focus on extension timelines and conference committee talks proceed.
Supreme Court Justice Will Wilson will resign June 1 to run full time for Texas attorney general. Gov. Shivers will appoint a replacement until Jan. 1. Democratic primary rivals for the high court include Robert Hughes and James Norvell. Wilson, a former Dallas county DA, notes leaving with reluctance and quotes about facing the guns.
Floods flood Indianapolis and the Midwest after three days of heavy rain. A 14 year old girl died in Salt Creek near Middletown. One thousand five hundred families evacuated in Indianapolis as streets flooded and travel by rowboat became common. The 500 mile Memorial Day auto race at the Speedway City was delayed but expected to start on schedule. Deluge also sent soldiers to Idaho near the Kootenai River and caused damage in Iowa towns with hail and window losses.
Moscow disclosed four Azerbaijan Communist leaders were executed for terroristic acts and counter revolutionary participation. Former Azerbaijan Premier Mir Djafar Bagirov led the group as Beria’s close ally, with three others executed and two others sentenced to 25 years. The trial occurred in Baku from April 12 to 26 and was announced in the Baku Worker May 27.
School Superintendent Newell Odell spoke to the Lions Club at noon about Childress needs for a junior college and continued summer operations. He named Childress as an ideal Texas site and urged Lions support while noting local drought and possible pool-filtering project with Jaycees. Visiting Lions included Bob Jameson and Cloyce Rainwater. guests were Charles Reynolds and Gordon Gravley.
In Cyprus two truck occupants were killed and one seriously wounded when four gunmen in a black car intercepted a truck between Nicosia and Famagusta. A Turkish police officer also died earlier, raising the day’s toll amid rising Greek Turkish tensions.
Washington reports that the Agriculture Department acts with haste to activate the new farm bill featuring a 1.2 billion soil bank. President Eisenhower signs the measure ending a four month fight with Congress. The act includes mandatory grain price supports and soil bank payments for reducing production.
President Eisenhower’s nomination of Fred A. Seaton to be secretary of the interior drew enthusiastic praise from senators of both parties. Sen. James E. Murray called the nomination “pleasant news,” and Sen. Wayne Morse praised it as an excellent appointment with enthusiastic endorsement. Seaton, a 46 year old former Nebraska senator and Midwest newspaper publisher, currently serves as deputy assistant to the president and has held prior roles in defense and White House staff. The Senate Interior Committee, chaired by Murray, is to review the nomination.
In Rome and other Italian cities the pro western Christian Democrats and allies failed to secure a majority under the new proportional voting law. Rome and Genoa lost control while Florence Milan and Venice hung in the balance with Communist Bologna remaining in control. The deadlock threatened governance across major cities.
County Agent Bill Moore estimates Childress County irrigated wheat remains unharvested and the total county crop may reach 300 000 to 500 000 bushels. No shipments have left Childress or Kirkland yet by Fort Worth and Denver. Kirkland shipments expected this weekend as workers move to load cars.
County Agent Bill Moore reported this morning that irrigated cotton is showing thrips and flea hoppers. He noted that spraying will often be necessary to control the pests.
Mickey Parsons of Fowler Colorado was taken to an Amarillo specialist this morning after injuring his spine in a fall from a truck near Childress. He had been at Childress General Hospital and was transported by Newberry ambulance. Parsons worked for the R D Lewis Banana Company of Fowler.
City Manager Joe Howard reports free parking in the downtown area on Memorial Day. City offices will operate during regular hours.
North west Methodist Conference at Big Spring announced year assignments. Dr J O Haymes reassigned to First Methodist Church with Rev Barnett replaced by E C Armstrong at King Memorial. Barnett goes to Aiken. Dr E E White named Superintendent of Childress District. Numerous Childress District appointments listed, plus Haymes named to three conference committees.
Willard Williams treasurer reports postponement of the degree work for Childress Masonic Lodge No. 695 scheduled for tonight at 8 oclock. A rescheduled date will be announced by The Index.
