Blue and Gold banquet honors Cub Pack leaders here

At the annual Blue and Gold banquet Cub Pack sponsored by Childress Elks Lodge No 1113 honored Den Mothers Mrs Guy Jones Mrs R H Rudasill Mrs Edgar Murphy Mrs Elmer Terry and Mrs J B Johnson. Scoutmaster Alton Landrum presented a 10 year certificate to Guy Jones Exalted Ruler of the Elks for a decade of sponsorship. The lodge touted 500+ Cub members in 10 years. State Patrolman Douglas Cooper demonstrated marksmanship with a diamond ring mirror alongside Capt K B Hallmark and Patrolman Dale Papasan of Wichita Falls. Photos also show Cubs Mikie Pennell Reid Lockhoof receiving awards.

Cairo reports an Israeli army opened fire on an Egyptian outpost near Gaza Tuesday. Premier Nasser chairs an emergency cabinet meeting amid rising border tensions and a near-war footing. Egyptian forces moved into Gaza area at night, with exchanges described as targetless and significant reinforcements deployed near El Arish.

Tax On Telephone Poles Proposed By Lawmaker

AUSTIN March 2 Rep T W Buckshot Lane from Wharton proposed a 50 cent tax on each telephone pole in Texas claiming poles are abundant and underused by carriers. The idea is in lieu of a rental fee and aims to fund state needs. Also the House approved a constitutional amendment to remove the 10 percent usury cap on small loans and to let the Legislature set loan rates. a separate plan would cap rates for loans under 100 and between 100 and 1500. In education news the House Education committee advanced a bill to raise state college tuition by 25 dollars per semester. Continued on Page Four.

Grand Jury to Probe Matusow Case in El Paso

Federal grand jury convened by U S District Judge R E Thomas to probe Harvey Matusow amid a pending new trial bid by labor leader Clinton Jencks. The hearing, linked to Matusow’s repudiation of prior testimony, could spur charges of perjury or related offenses as Jencks seeks relief from a five year sentence.

Pastor Speaks To Rotary Club

Rev. J. F. Michael of Wellington spoke on The Four Way Test at the Rotary luncheon. Doyle McKinney led the program and next meeting plans at Wilson School cafeteria were announced with officer elections to follow. Nominees for vice president include M. K. Wilcoxson Gain es Highsmith and Bob Polson with nominations open. Rotarians were invited to hear Boone McClure of Canyon Sunday at 3 p m at the Woman's Department Club. W. L. Adams of Clayton New Mexico visited. Jerry Williams named Junior Rotarian for March and Cecil Braly was a guest.

Irving Teachers Tie Board Ultimatum Sparks School Walkout

More than 200 Irving public school teachers and staff refused to return to work after the board's ultimatum threatening firing for noncompliance. The clash followed the firing of Supt. John L. Beard two weeks prior. Ward of Plymouth Park Elementary led the dissent, demanding improvements before resuming duties.

Drizzle and Fog Drape Texas Coast and Inland Areas

A dry stable airmass persisted over Texas but coastal and inland areas saw clouds and fog. Drizzle appeared near San Antonio and Victoria while most of the coast was veiled in fog with mild to warm temperatures statewide. Dalhart logged a low of 30 as Dallas and Houston areas reached the high sixties.

Services Pending For Former Resident Ernest Brown Evans

Funeral arrangements are in progress for Ernest Brown Evans 45 of Fort Worth who died at the Veterans Hospital in Amarillo. He was employed by McKinney Iron Works in Fort Worth. Evans is survived by his wife Tommie his mother Mrs I M Long three brothers Bill L L Quanah W L Pueblo Colo and one sister Mrs Eddy Kephart Los Angeles Calif. The body will be sent to Childress today. Arrangements are under Newberry Funeral Home.

January Bond Sale Exceeds Quota In West Texas Area

Childress County reports selling 9.12 percent of its 1955 series E and H bonds quota in January. County chairman E. E. Smith says at current pace the year’s $250,000 target will be met. District four including multiple counties reached 7.12 percent, Amarillo district led at 12.25 percent, overall region 10.28 percent.

Local KP Lodge To Honor State Officer

Canyon Named as Finalist for Cowboy Hall of Fame

A site selection committee narrowed the list of candidates for the cowboy hall of fame from 46 to 10. Remaining cities include Canyon Texas Cheyenne Wyoming Colorado Springs Colorado Las Vegas New Mexico Oklahoma City Prescott Arizona Rapid City South Dakota and North Platte Nebraska. The panel will visit the 10 cities for inspections ahead of an April 15 meeting to finalize the site selection chaired by C A Reynolds of Kansas City Missouri.

Signal Corps Spy Charges Renewed by McCarthy

Eisenhower Affirms Western Lead in Nuclear Arms

Indictments Returned in Childress Case Against Al Smith Jr

Two indictments, both against Al Smith Jr, were returned by the Grand Jury in Northeast Childress on the night of February 5. The proceedings ended with the jury dismissed. Smith faces assault with intent to murder after a shooting incident. Also noted are other cases set for March 14 including murder, theft, burglary, and a divorce finalized in district court.

No Change Noted in Crash Victim Montie Richardson

Montie Richardson 18 of Estelline remained in fair condition at Childress General Hospital after a Monday morning crash. He suffered a skull fracture and multiple injuries when the car struck a guard post near the Drive-In Theater. Jack L Bowman 29, also of Estelline, was killed in the one car accident and owned the auto.

Livestock Committee Sets March 12 Show Premiums

The Greenbelt Junior Breeders Livestock Show to be held March 12 will be discussed at a Livestock Committee meeting of the C of C and BCC at 1 30 p m tomorrow in City Hall. Dr Rob Jones heads the committee which will provide premiums for the show. The Childress Jaycees sponsor the event.

White's Auto Store names Edsel Wiginton assistant head

Edsel Wiginton is named assistant head at White's Auto Store in Childress replacing Clyde Madison who moves to Amarillo. Wiginton, a four year White's veteran, previously worked in Altus Borger and Clovis NM. He and his family reside at 1000 Avenue J NW and attend First Baptist Church.

Elks Drop Citizenship Award in Childress County

The Childress Elks Lodge voted not to sponsor the Outstanding Citizen of Childress County award at the upcoming banquet. Exalted Ruler Guy Jones said the three year award included a plaque and a diamond-studded key for recipients Morris Higley, Dick Risenhoover, and Dr. Jack Fox. It is unclear if another civic group will take over next year.
