President Johnson receives a bill to raise the public debt limit from 336 billion to 365 billion, with an initial step to 358 billion effective Saturday. The measure, approved 60 to 30 in the Senate after House passage, covers fiscal 1968 and 1969 through June 1969 to ease deficit management without further Congress actions.
U.S. and Soviet officials express optimism they can present a nearly complete draft for a nuclear nonproliferation treaty at Geneva. Rusk and Gromyko discuss safeguards to police the agreement while drafting delays push an incomplete text to Geneva with hopes to finalize later.
William Gurvich, a former aide to District Attorney J Garrison, says Garrison’s case against Clay L Shaw hinges on Russo and suggests Shaw was chosen perhaps because of a shared first name with Clay Bertrand. Gurvich resigned after seven months with the Kennedy case inquiry.
House Republican Leader Gerald Ford warned of serious inflation and rejected tax hikes, urging comparable federal spending reductions instead. He criticized Johnson’s tax proposal as inconsistent and said Congress would have trouble approving increases before year end. Mills of Ways and Means spoke at a convention.
Lt Governor Preston Smith appoints Senator Jack Hightower Vernon Barbara Jordan Houston David Ratliff Stamford Murray Watson Waco and J P Ward Meridian to the Legislative Council the legislature's permanent research arm. The council conducts studies between sessions and drafts most of the state's legislation. Watson and Ward are noted.
Funeral services for Mrs. G. L. Dake of Quanah will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church with burial in Quanah Cemetery. She died at 7 a.m. Tuesday in Chillicothe Hospital. Survivors include her husband a son two daughters and several grandchildren.
Doris Longbine’s mother Matilda Ella Sams, 81, died Tuesday in an Amarillo hospital after 29 years as an Amarillo resident and time in a convalescent home. Funeral arrangements were pending with Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors. Survivors include her husband T. H. Sams and many children and grandchildren across California Texas and Missouri.
A firm contract brings Them the number three band in England to Childress for an engagement from 9 to 12 p.m. July 12 at the Fair Park Auditorium. Advance tickets are two dollars, two fifty at the door. Them has sold five million records on a U.S. tour with only two Texas stops, the other at a Wichita Falls teen club. The Hysterical Society of Amarillo performs Friday night from 8:30 p.m. to midnight at the same venue, with admission one fifty. The Vicounts canceled after their equipment was stolen.
A dynamite bomb shattered the home of J. L. Leflore in Mobile, injuring no one seriously. Leflore, a key civil rights organizer in south Alabama, blamed white groups in Jackson for the attack and has filed a Justice Department complaint related to a prior fatal police shooting there.
New officers of the Childress Rotary Club were installed by Past President Charles Reynolds. John T. Forbis, the new president, showed slides from the Rotary International Convention in Nice, France. Other officers include Robert Carter vice president Kenneth Fink secretary Clarence Carter Ross Smith Perry Morren Bill Hamm and Willard Williams as past president and director. Committees announced cover programs fellowship budget attendance classification membership four way test and pledge student guests and scholarships and more with chairs and advisors listed.
Diplomatic sources say the Soviet Union faces growing demands from allies from North Vietnam to Egypt. Moscow has poured billions into the bloc but shows little to show for it, with new requests totaling over $1 billion in coming months.
UPI reports Marines and bombers struck a Communist force that slipped back onto the battlefield near Hill 881 below the North South border. A Marine company supported by 200 plus Leathernecks killed at least 28 of the North Vietnamese as Marines counted 10 dead and 27 wounded. In separate actions nearby, Allied forces engaged about 600 Communists as 80 more were killed in scattered fighting north of Saigon.
A Department of Defense plan received final approval by Mayor C. J. Lyons County Judge Donald Black and City Manager Louis Sally. The plan guides residents in a national emergency by listing fallout shelters private basements and public buildings and instructions to reinforce shelters and allot capacity.
Richard L. West, 10, of Lincoln Nebraska, cut a utility pole with a lawn mower. He accidentally clipped a guy wire causing the pole to fall, injuring no one and prompting no fires or arrests.
Two residents of Childress are in Childress General Hospital after a home made bomb exploded at 911 A S yesterday at 3 30 p m. Mrs Bessie Banks and her son Robert Lee Banks were injured. Robert Lee was handling powder from firecrackers when the pipe exploded. Mrs Banks suffered a wound near the abdomen wall and an eye gash. Robert Lee had two fingers partially amputated and burns on both hands.
The Area I Young Homemakers group hosts a session at Amarillo College with Mrs. Teddy Hightower and Mrs. Leonard King Jr. attending. Registration starts at 8 am as J. G. Cannon leads the program with guest Paul Sneed addressing child education on sex. A modeling school and kitchen planning demo round out the program.
