Grant Takes Command of Illinois Regiment in 1861
In mid June 1861 Ulysses S. Grant travels from Springfield to Camp Yates to assume command of the 7th District Regiment of Illinois. He overcomes rough treatment from unruly troops and earns their respect through firm leadership and early discipline. John A. Logan and John A. McClernand address the men before Grant speaks, urging enlistment. Grant then takes command as the regiment prepares for federal muster and potential three year service.
