USDA report shows East Texas green feed abundant while southern, western, and Trans Pecos ranges are nearly bare. Cattle and calves at 80 percent condition. sheep at 75 percent. May rains boosted overall range to 75 percent, but last year and long-term averages remain higher.
A Panair do Brasil plane en route from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires with 24 aboard crashed and burned near Asuncion while attempting a routine landing. Fifteen were killed or missing, six passengers and three crew hospitalized with burns, including Time correspondent John Dowling. Flight details place the crash seven and a half miles from Asuncion at 1:15 a.m. in Villa Elisa.
Buenos Aires reports a military revolt against President Juan D. Peron with bombings at the Plaza de Mayo. Rebels and loyalists broadcast messages as reports say the government claimed the revolt crushed while rebels said the army and people took over. Casualties and damage mount in the square amid continued fighting. In Brownwood Texas heavy storms, two tornadoes, and 107 mph winds strike Oklahoma City area with flooding risk. Brown County emergency crews stand by as lake levels rise and hail and wind damage affect towns from Eastland to DeLeon.
Democratic National Chairman Paul M. Butler accuses a controlled press in Texas of fueling a rift between liberals and conservatives. He targets the Dallas Morning News and urges Republicans to align, arguing many self described Democrats are really Republicans afraid to reveal colors. Butler spoke in Dallas to 1,200 people and travels next to Waco and the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
The British submarine Sidon exploded near Portland harbor on Thursday sending a mushroom yellow smoke plume into the air and sinking in 35 feet of water. The admiralty reports 13 officers and men missing, seven survivors injured, and divers ordered to search the wreck while salvage vessels hurry to the scene.
A United Auto Workers delegation arrived in Milwaukee to pursue a separate contract with AMC at the Milwaukee body plant. Talks in Detroit had adjourned after two days focused on a master contract covering AMC workers in Michigan California and Wisconsin, which expires August 12.
President Eisenhower in exile declares mock martial law across the nation during the Operation Alert civil defense drill. Officials study relief, communications restoration, and industry recovery after simulated attacks on 61 cities.
Six area young men, including Robert D. Bradshaw of Childress, were forwarded to the Armed Forces Induction Station at Amarillo this week for induction into the Army. Others named are James M. Thornton and Joe N. Wardell of Silverton, Cecil D. Mitchell of Lakeview, Loward Walker of Quitaque, and James R. Aduddell of Memphis.
Watkins, Inc a landmark business in Childress announced remodeling by manager Walter Lockhoof. The plan begins with lowering of the ceiling in the next days and includes a full top to bottom remodel across three stores in Quanah Childress and Altus Oklahoma with a new lease already signed. Elven Watkins president and Doug Jeffrey general manager lead the company with offices in Melbourne Florida and Quanah Oklahoma.
The government said 21 American soldiers who joined communism in Korea may return at their own risk but could be prosecuted. A joint White House State Defense and Justice release outlined transfer to consular officials and possible federal or military charges after return.
San Antonio would become the first Texas city to desegregate public schools in the fall. Superintendent Portwood said the board will seek an opinion from attorney Arley V. Knight, with plans for integration by September. He noted teachers would remain in place by term and implied staff segregation by prior school assignment.
The Presbyterian Church will not hold 11 o'clock services Sunday morning. The supply committee, Kenneth Fink and Roe Smith, were unable to secure a substitute pastor, according to Fink.
A severe storm unleashed 107 mph winds over Oklahoma City on Thursday causing widespread power outages and flooding. Fire and police reported thousands without power, cars flooded, and dozens of families evacuated. Only minor injuries noted, with substantial property damage in the city and surrounding areas.
A meeting of landowners and sportsmen at the courthouse discussed turkey and deer season dates from November 19 to 28 and proposed increasing the turkey limit to two with one hen. Antelope season in the Dalhart area may be split into three periods October 12-14 15-17 and 18-20 with permits issued by Austin for five dollars. A year round pheasant season was recommended and no season on the Spanish red legged partridge.
Fort Morgan Colorado. Crews with derricks and bulldozers work to clear the wreckage of a Union Pacific steamliner after a flash flood washed out track. One crewman was killed and several injured among 315 aboard. a relief train carried uninjured passengers to Denver. The train detoured onto the Colorado main line and slowed to 50 mph before the crash.
The nation’s first bale of cotton sold for 1680 81. Growers Will Wallace of Edinburg and Jerry Block of Sharyland produced the bale. W F Devine of Harlingen bought it for 313 a pound and donated it to the Harlingen Elks Lodge for crippled children. A 1500 bonus raised the total to 3180 81.
