A tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico near Port St. Joe Northwest Florida was expected to bring winds up to 50 mph around midnight and minor coastal flooding tides three feet above normal. The system was not named and would be called Audrey if upgraded to a full storm.
Slaii, leader of the Armenian anti Communist Tashnik party, was shot by two Communists as he opened his Beirut apartment window on the eve of crucial elections. Armenian Communist underground blamed. Roy M. Smith 67, former Childress resident, died Thursday in El Paso. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Clifton Tennison officiating. Masonic rites precede burial at 1 p.m. at the Masonic Hall. Burial in Childress Cemetery under Newberry Funeral Home direction. Born November 3, 1890, in Ross, he worked as a miner near Santa Rita NM and was a FW&D employee in Childress until 1921. Surviving: wife Maude. daughter Mrs. Marvin Mathes of Silver City NM. brother Ray Smith of Waco. sister.

State Jaycee President Red Gentry urged members to develop leadership to improve Childress and to make 1957 58 the club’s best year. IP Chairman Oren Harris announced a Sunday press conference amid reports that President Eisenhower will drop his push for amendments to the pending natural gas bill. The measure would ease federal price controls for independent natural gas producers. Eisenhower had sought costs-based production formulas and FPC review of escalator increases, while producers demanded field pricing for a fair return. Harris declined to discuss details but promised an important statement from the president on the gas bill. He would not confirm whether Sunday developments would boost passage of the bill, which he co sponsored.
Attorney General Will Wilson announced a total lockup of Gulf coast gambling dens with plans for raids and court actions next week. Washington June 8 House Republican Leader Joseph W Martin Jr said he is certain the House next week will reject a southern bid to attach a jury trial amendment to the civil rights bill Rep Edwin F Willis of Louisiana said he remains confident the amendment will gain enough northern support to pass IT may have been adopted if the vote were held today Willis noted southern leaders expect a House fight over the measure with passage of the bill likely but revision hoped for the senate has opposed similar moves Eisenhower and other supporters warn the amendment could wreck the bill and hinder civil rights enforcement
District Boy Scout leaders and committee chairmen met at the WTA office to set Summer and Fall plans. Vernon Camp Perkins representative Lyle Wilcott announced Camp open times and a five week schedule. camp extended by one week due to attendance. Sunset Camp near Boulder Oklahoma in Wichita Mountains will run the first two weeks of August with reservations urged. Cost is 11 dollars per person per week. Roy Key reported on Explorer Unit 65 river trip down Red River guided by Edwin Cato and sponsored by the American Legion. The rubber raft journey started at Wellington road bridge and reached Quanah after about six and a half hours. photographers and Quanah spectators greeted them. Next meeting set for September 5 with attendees listed.
An Army Specialist William S. Girard is predicted to be ordered to Washington next week and not stand trial in a Japanese court. Government attorneys expected the federal court to follow precedent and uphold the decision to turn Girard over for trial in Japan.
President Eisenhower declares in a letter to Rep. Timothy Sheehan that he will not change foreign or domestic policies to chase polls. He says U S policy must stay firm and align with the 1956 Republican platform and his campaign promises. He notes public support varies but policy should not be altered for popularity.
A UT Bureau of Business research report finds defense installations boosting Texas income through new bomber bases radar stations and bases at Amarillo Austin Wichita Falls and San Antonio. The study cites Nike rings around Dallas Fort Worth growth in Fort Worth area and upcoming projects in Galveston Bay boosting civilian payrolls and industrial activity.
NORTH FORT HOOD TEX June 8 UP The 49th Armored Division of 9 200 men paraded for Governor's Day with Maj Gen K L Berry adjutant general of Texas reviewing 1000 wheeled and combat vehicles. Berry replaced Gov Price Daniel. Miss Danna Karlen Dallas division sweet heart presented a trophy. Seven awards were given including best company size unit to the Dallas division band and several battalion and battery honors.
County Agent Bill Moore reports the final rain damaged early wheat in Childress County, likely downgrading much of the crop. Some wheat planted late remains green and undamaged, while cotton has suffered washouts requiring replanting. About 26 000 acres were planted this year.
