In San Juan the commonwealth option won 425 081 votes to 273 315 for statehood with 4 205 for independence. Leaders claim moral victory and vow focus on economic and social issues as FBI notes no Sabotage.
The Childress Riding Club calls a meeting at City Hall tonight at p.m. for members to discuss participation in the Hollis Parade foal rodeo.
President Johnson grants Romney request for 5,000 regular U S Army troops to reinforce 10,000 National Guardsmen and police facing riots in Detroit Michigan Governor Romney and Mayor Cavanagh toured the area and Deputy Defense Secretary Vance planned to meet officials. At least nine deaths were unofficially listed as looting and arson spread over a 175 block area with blocks ablaze and a total damage estimate over 100 million dollars.
North and South Vietnamese forces clashed inside the DMZ for the first time in two months. South Vietnamese patrols met a major Communist force, killing at least 25. U.S. reports note air and artillery strikes and ongoing patrols near Saigon.
Rain totals near three inches saturated coastal Galveston while Corsicana and Corsican area faced heavy showers. A squall caused minor damage in Corsicana with winds uprooting trees and tearing signs. No major flooding reported though Galveston drainage problems persisted.

Malcolm Wolff of Albuquerque N M was arrested by city police yesterday afternoon at the crossroads and taken to Shamrock where he faced charges of stealing a coin collection valued at 400 dollars from Larry Montgomery’s automobile. He reportedly drove south toward Childress with a license plate on his car.
Larry Durwood Chaney 16 of Paducah drowned while trying to swim across a 40 yard stock tank on the Y Ranch near the Foard Cottle County line. Six other youths present said he went under after struggling in about 10 feet of water. His body was recovered 45 minutes later by his father Arlie Chaney after a call from their nearby home. Paducah Fire Department efforts failed to revive him. Justice of the Peace H H Moore ruled accidental drowning. Funeral arrangements with Norris Funeral Home in Paducah.
A 24 year old antiwar demonstrator George John Vizard IV was shot to death Sunday in Austin. Police say a robbery at Town Country Drive in grocery killed him. his death sparks debate over political motive and tribute from fellow students. Funeral planned in Austin with burial in San Antonio.
The Childress Chamber of Commerce board of directors will convene at 6 p.m. today in the chamber office to hold its regular meeting.
The City Council will meet this evening at City Hall. Officials invite residents to attend and observe the session, with agenda items including local ordinances and community matters.
A UPI survey shows major racial disorders in at least 37 cities with Detroit and Newark hardest hit. Casualties include eight dead in Detroit and 24 in Newark over five days, as violence spreads to numerous urban areas across the nation.
Rev. Nicholas Hood, Detroit's only Black councilman, said he and his family have been threatened and are leaving their home. He blamed riots for the unrest calling it lawlessness, not civil rights, and declined to identify the threateners.
