President Nixon signed the largest tax revision in a generation, curbing loopholes while restoring more tax cuts than he proposed. He warned of budget actions to balance next year and noted the plan’s mixed impact on savings, housing, and the cost of living. The package also includes Social Security boosts and gains for low income taxpayers.
In the opening hours of the Viet Cong New Year cease fire an American soldier was killed and several wounded by a mortar attack. Ten South Vietnamese soldiers were hurt in four Viet Cong rocket and mortar strikes during the first 14 hours of the 72 hour cease fire. U.S. B 52 sorties dropped more than 1000 tons of bombs across the Saigon north area as allied forces prepared for a later 24 hour cease fire.
AP Special Correspondent William L. Ryan reports that North Vietnam is reacting to the Nixon administration’s Vietnam policy with heightened propaganda. Hanoi argues U.S. withdrawal tempo may grow, aiding South Vietnam’s strength, while broadcast claims of global antiwar protest undermine American resolve and boost Hanoi’s aims.
The Space Agency shuts its Electronics Research Center in Cambridge Massachusetts, eliminating 850 jobs and an $18 million annual payroll. Massachusetts firms lose about $25 million in annual NASA contracts. Senator Edward M Kennedy calls the decision disastrous while Governor Francis Sargent comments.
The Associated Press reports a weakening storm leaves parts of West and North Texas thawing while Central and East Texas endure freezing rain sleet and snow. Friona sees seven inches of snow, Wichita Falls reports 11/2 inches with airports and roads hazardous, Dallas and Fort Worth face icy conditions and 25 accidents. Sheppard Air Force Base plans to resume operations after a recent power failure.
A congressional inquiry finds major weapons systems running about 50 percent over initial estimates. Navy costs include an overrun of 800 to 850 million dollars plus potential further increases. Shipbuilders claims on changes ordered by the Navy drive the rise for 125 ships over 13 years.
Chamber of Commerce directors authorize President Tom Lemen to form permanent committees with the City Council to plan water from Red River to Baylor and Lake Childress and to coordinate with Water Inc of Lubbock. Morris Higley requested the committees. Hayes of Palo Duro Scenic Road Assn to speak. The association seeks a $100 Chamber membership. Last year’s audit shows $6,700 spent of a $8,895 budget.
A Lions Club meeting featured the film It's Easy To Smile When Someone Cares about Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch. It showcased the boys’ dreams and vocational training. Cecil Pryor organized the program with Alton Landrum presiding in place of President Jerry Dugan. Guests included Keith Fanning Hereford Jerry Newberry Houston Don Davis Morris Plains N J Mrs Glen Stiner and Mrs Alton Landrum.
Last rites for Darrin Clyde Pillow 52 of Houston and former Childress resident will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Newberry Chapel. Rev. L F Phillips will officiate with burial in Childress Cemetery. Pillow died Sunday in Houston after birth in 1917 in Fisher County and a World War II veteran. He is survived by three sisters and two brothers.
Five mystery French gunboats moved toward Haifa as rough seas slow their approach. Israeli experts said the vessels were at least a day out and possibly delayed by weather and slower escorts.
A Miami Hollywood rock festival ended after a fatal fall, 47 arrests, a three hour power outage, and a six figure loss. Allan Wayne Ollis, 20, of Sumter, S C, died from a fractured skull on a dark spotlight tower. Police reported most arrests for illegal drug offenses.
At the 48th Vietnam peace talks session in Paris, Ambassador Habib delivered a list of missing U.S. personnel to Hanoi’s delegation and urged identification of prisoners. He urged neutral inspection of camps and exchange talks, noting alleged solitary confinement and lack of repatriation efforts. Xuan Thuy boycotted the session over Nixon’s naming of a successor.
Sen. Ralph Yarborough warns Texas Democrats their complacency fuels Republican campaigning. He says if voter registration does not rise beyond current levels, Democratic incumbents like Gov. Preston Smith face trouble, though he does not foresee defeat for Smith or himself. He notes record registration could occur if the May 31 deadline approaches amid a worsening economy.
