Break-ins Hit Local Businesses. Safe Damaged at Smith Motor
Two break-ins and an attempted burglary were reported by police. Smith Motor Company lost 541.35 from the safe after it was pried open and damaged beyond use. Items stolen from Paul Pierce Shoe Shop totaled about 15 dollars. An attempted break-in occurred at United Super Market next to Pierce’s shop. Sheriff Gaylon B. Smith asked Texas Rangers to assist. Navy Probes Jet Plane Crash Into Chesapeake Bay
Navy aviation experts launched a wide inquiry after the Seamaster jet bomber exploded in flight and crashed into Chesapeake Bay during an experimental test. One crewman died, three were missing and presumed dead as salvage crews and divers search the 55 foot deep waters for bodies. The aircraft, touted as the world first multi jet seaplane, sparked hopes for future atomic aircraft propulsion.
