A tractor ridden by Ward Terry was struck by an Abilene Motor Coaches bus yesterday noon. The tractor tore in two, the motor flew 50 feet, and Terry was found 115 feet from the crash. He died soon after reaching Childress General Hospital.
Funeral services for Ward Terry a 46 year old Cee Wee farmer killed when his tractor was struck by a bus and overturned will be held at 10 p m tomorrow at the First Methodist Church Rev R H Knight of the Tell Methodist Church will lead assisted by Rev Ira Parrack and Rev W B Morton Pallbearers are Guy Mosley Garland Terrell Clyde Hackler Guy Burton Glen Kidwell and Kirby Clayton Burial will be in Childress Cemetery Survivors include his widow sons Stanley and Leland his mother Mrs Ella Terry a sister Mrs Grady Parr and a brother James Terry all of Cee Vee
Attorney General John Ben Shepperd was hospitalized in Austin with appendicitis after reporting stomach pain. He improved Thursday and doctors said surgery might be avoided. If unable to attend Friday's segregation suit in Big Spring, Assistant Attorney General Burnell Waldrip will represent the State Board of Education.
Jaycee Club members plan a family picnic tonight at 7 in Rotary Bowl. President Gordon Gravely announces families should bring a covered dish or sack supper while the club provides cold drinks and ice cream.
Willard Williams reports that films of the Masonic Home will be shown during the regular lodge meeting at 8 o'clock tonight. All members are urged to attend.
General Lau rence S. Kuter of the US Far East Air Force told reporters in Honolulu that Communist air power currently outnumbers the Allies in the Pacific. He stressed qualitative Allied superiority shown in the Korean war as MIGs versus Sabrejets, noting Fifth Air Force F 86s shot down 802 MIG 15s with 58 losses. He avoided predicting new hostilities while calling Korea’s peace uneasy and acknowledging broader North Korea and China airfield buildup.
Airman Daniel C Schmidt and his wife Una were reconciled in Portland after Una had married another man believing Schmidt died in Red China. They met at Schmidt's mother's home and planned to honeymoon again, with Una pledging the union "for keeps if Danny wants me."
Airman Napoleon Green, 21, a supply clerk from Chicago, ran amok at a US air base four hours before a scheduled court martial on theft and an alleged throat-slashing of a British girl. He killed three, wounded nine, then shot himself on a Kent coast beach. Green denied stealing money and the investigation was ongoing.
Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu travels to Washington for one day of talks with Vice President Nixon to ease wartime hostilities and seek release of 577 Japanese held on war crime charges. He notes 210 under US jurisdiction, 149 Australian, 131 Dutch, 80 British, and seven under IMTFE.
Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson told a Bloomington speech that American cotton farmers are in trouble and the nation cannot remain a residual supplier in world markets. Skelly Oil awarded the drilling contract to Schaeffer Drilling Company of Oklahoma City.
The Public Health Service reported that inadequate inactivation of the polio virus and weak safety tests allowed live virus into some Cutter vaccine shots. The outbreak linked to Cutter vaccines involved 169 polio cases. New safety standards were issued May 27 and Cutter’s Berkeley facilities face future plans decisions. no license revocation has occurred.
An eight member American farm delegation reports from Russia that Soviet agriculture lags behind the United States by about 25 years in modern methods and by as much as 100 years in some manual practices. They described combines and scythes together in fields and noted limited incentives and undermechanzation hindering output. Lam bert noted seed introductions and new planting ideas for further study and praised windbreak plantings while acknowledging friendship and lingering barriers between nations.
Rep Albert Thomas urged an emergency session of Congress to appropriate funds for flood relief in northeastern states. The Houston Democrat, a senior appropriations member, mediated requests for 11 million dollars as urged by President Eisenhower via Val Peterson.
Senate Democratic leader Lyndon B. Johnson departed Washington for his Texas ranch for rest and medical input. He awaits doctors to decide if he can continue as Democratic leader in the 84th Congress. Johnson plans December checks at Mayo Clinic and Atlanta before resuming work if approved.
Traffic accidents killed 188 people and injured 5,348 in Texas in July, per the Department of Public Safety. The year’s death toll reached 1,340, slightly above the 1,329 for the same period last year.
