About 76 percent of Illinois acreage this year planted to Cuban Queen or Dixie Queen, which along with Early Kansas and John Brown are susceptible to the soil borne wilt disease, which can persist 15 to 20 years in soil. Varietal tests conducted with growers in various state areas seek wilt resistant types.
