In Grand Forks North Dakota on October 8 the Red River valley potato movement nears finish with small shipments anticipated. Digging in the southern valley continues but most stock may be under cover as a heavy frost threatens stores. Prices have fallen from 60 65 cents to 35 40 cents per cwt, with high selling costs and narrow margins for dealers. The USDA open buying at 60 cents per cwt boosted some, but a lasting market lift remains uncertain as continued stock and weather risks loom.

In Federal Court here A Bronstein, a Philadelphia fruit dealer, sued the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad over damages for 25 cars of watermelons shipped from Florida, South Carolina and Georgia in 1935. The jury heard 100 witnesses as the court rejected the carrier’s defense that proof of negligence lay with the claimant and upheld the plaintiff’s burden of showing lack of negligence.
