Jackson a Los Angeles tomato and celery shipper will offer a limited supply of San Diego county Brogdex treated tomatoes starting with the first shipments late this week. He will have exclusive distribution from his El Cajon acreage and expects sales to limit decay and shrinkage.
Orlando reporter A M Pratt of the Associated Citrus Growers and Shippers on Thursday estimated Florida’s coming citrus crop at 36,900,000 boxes versus last season’s 40,540,000. He forecasts 21,500,000 boxes oranges 12,500,000 grapefruit and 2,000,000 tangerines.

Payette Idaho reports government purchases of Idaho Jonathans for relief, with about 300 baskets secured to date at 60 cents per basket for fancy grade. Frank B Arata named general chairman of a growers and dealers committee to allocate orders, fruit shipped to relief centers for distribution to the needy amid favorable weather and ongoing harvests of other varieties ahead.
Los Angeles October 1 total merchantable Valencia orange estimate raised by 100 cars by California Arizona Orange Grapefruit Agency field staff. Current movement leaves 1 461 cars to go out of 23 850 cars estimate. Tulare Navel first movement expected November with minor activity until mid month. Prorate set at 700 cars interstate for coming week, down 100 from last week.
Harlingen Texas October 1 C E Mc Cormick Valley representative of the state Commissioner of Agriculture J E McDonald announced this week that citrus growers of the Valley voted 40 to 1 in favor of the proposed state marketing agreement which would regulate fruit shipments within the state as to grades sizes and varieties Shippers representing 65 per cent of the tonnage of fruit shipped already have signed the agreement.
California grape markets show signs of a lift after last week’s lows. Lodi Tokays strengthen to 67% to 70 cents per package, Thompsons steady, black juice demand firm, Carignanes and Zinfandels priced higher per ton. Shipments remain heavy with up to 176 cars in a day from central California.
In Yakima and Wenatchee districts, federal crop reporting board statisticians defend apple yield estimates. C Borum and P Newman said 250 Yakima valley and 150 Wenatchee growers’ reports fed the data during a recent conference with locals. A meeting organized by the Yakima Valley Traffic and Credit Association aimed to explain the estimation process amid concerns from I G Hough of American Fruit Growers Inc.
Sacramento Calif October 1 Continuance ordered this week in a trial to test the legality of the 1937 California Marketing Act. Deputy Attorney General Ralph Cowling sues the California Fruit Exchange. Continuance for two weeks to allow amendment to include four Lake county pear growers. Suit stems from a demand for 1 011 on a Lake county pears shipment. Pear ranch operators demurred against the 3 cent per box assessment intended for advertising and promoting Bartlett sales.
The federal Surplus Commodities Corporation plans to buy surplus western New York apples. E C Little has set up quarters in Albany to manage purchases and distribution to state relief agencies. Details on quantity and price are not yet available, but selection will favor U S Utility or better fruit and will not disrupt normal marketing.
San Benito Texas October 1 Independent Shippers Association cash buyers of citrus fruits issued a statement through president C D Kirk denying any moves to weaken the citrus bonding and licensing law via injunctions against the Commissioner of Agriculture or personal attacks. John N Hager of Valley Citrus Exchange echoed support for compliance with the law noting it may not benefit the exchange or independent shippers and stressing growers should be assured payment when contracts are made.
The New York local branch of the National League opened a fall and winter program with an unusually well attended gathering at the Pennsylvania hotel. President Charles Havener led off with remarks and stories before introducing Frank O. Urie of Philadelphia and George W. Stimpson of Washington as featured speakers at the kick-off event featuring a New England boiled dinner.
Salinas California October 1 market reports an improving lettuce quality but light demand with trading limited to top stock. F.O.B. carloads fetch $1.10 to $1.25 for fours and fives while sixes mostly $1. Shipments in ten days average over 150 cars daily and season movement to date reaches 19,090 cars, ahead of last year. FSCC Buys Potatoes in Red River Valley and Minnesota North Dakota after Friday purchases.

Cabbage bids rose to 23 per ton fob with sacked Danish at 16 to 18 per ton. Domestic goes to kraut processors. shipments about eight cars daily, similar to last season. Onions show light demand but firm prices. Yellow onions U S 1 fifty pound sacks bring 85 90c, small lots 18c per ten pounds. Shipments 16-26 cars daily. Through Sept 28 movement totaled 789 cars versus 817 last season. Carrot shipments rise slightly five to 13 cars daily. fob prices steady.

The plan calls for fruit proration. meanwhile west coast growers representing over 2,000,000 boxes seek a marketing agreement with full control of shipments and Florida discussions continue amid a prior meeting's discord in Lakeland.
A New York research physician reports inconclusive but encouraging findings that an orange a day may help infantile paralysis, with results submitted to the University of New Hampshire.
Winchester Va Oct 1 Robert W wayson head of the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation opens a Winchester base to buy Grimes Golden fruit at 50c per 100 pounds or per bushel basket for relief distribution in four states Pennsylvania Maryland West Virginia and Virginia. Purchases will be from growers packers or shippers with no quota system and advisory committees named in each state to assist.
Tallahassee Oct 1 Six new members named by Governor Cone join the Florida Citrus Commission replacing retiring officials. Appointees are W L Spivey Floral City Phil C Peters Winter Garden E C Welles Arcadia John Maxey Frostproof L P Thomas Palmetto and W M Moseley Fort Pierce. The panel will enforce citrus laws and manage an advertising fund financed by a per box tax.

Onions showed slow inquiry with no material change in quotations this week. Best No 1 yellows around 1.10 to 1.15 per bag, whites mainly 0.60, Spanish around 1.25, exports rising modestly with buyers active on certain grades. Apple exports to Sept 25 total 121,276 barrels and 106,129 boxes, 865,728 barrels and 498,647 boxes year-to-date.

He questions a National League convention planned for January in Pittsburgh and recounts tales of George Lasbury Laugh Berry a traveling salesman turned promoter and self styled Santa Claus promoting the event with promotional material and tall claims.
Washington reports the Bureau of Agricultural Economics says prospects are favorable for a much larger apple export movement from the United States to European markets. Factors include a larger US crop, reduced European apple crops, soft fruit shortages, improved European purchasing power, and tariff reductions. The US apple crop is expected to reach about 204 million bushels, one of the largest on record.
Salinas California growers and shippers circulate petitions protesting freight differentials between Arizona and California. Reports claim the discriminatory referential cost about 35 dollars per car, harming the Salinas Watsonville district. The petitions, part of over a hundred statewide, will be presented to the Interstate Commerce Commission for a hearing in the district soon.
Al Welch of New York died this week at his son’s home in Liberty, New York. He spent years in the fresh fruit and vegetable business in New York and later specialized in lime imports. Ill health forced retirement about two years ago. He was well respected in the market community.
