New York, Nov. 26 The Packer expands on Dillon auction coverage after readers demand more. A Portland Maine reader praises Dillon’s farm price efforts and criticizes Rural New Yorker coverage, arguing for fair apple prices and warning against misrepresentation.
New York reports a long Packer piece on apple day promotions with major prizes for Pittsburgh and Rochester. It covers car peddling limits, railroad protests, and Chicago in a broad advertiser contest, plus field reports on parades and displays across cities.
Vegetable shipments from southern California rise daily reaching 25 to 26 cars per day. Total shipments on Southern Pacific lines reach 288 cars and on Santa Fe lines 150 cars for a grand total of 438 cars this season.
California fruit shipments edge along as growers cling to the eight to one standard and use maturity certificates. Northern districts report slow ripening. Porterville notes a shipment refused for immaturity. In New Orleans homegrown produce such as curly parsley shallots white tip radishes carrots and endive are moving gradually with ample supplies expected in ten days Lettuce is not likely to move in volume until December 5 or 8 Demand across markets is encouraging with prices noted Curly parsley 40c per dozen bunches shallots 30c white radish 200 carrots 30c and endive 2 50 per barrel Prominent local operators and shippers are again active in the season despite storm damage.
Apple exports for the week ending last Saturday totaled 85 359 barrels, down from 98 720 a year earlier. Boxes are included in the barrel figures, with actual box counts to Europe not fully realized. Creditors of bankrupt dealer H Waldman face a drawn out settlement after a public sale of 300 storage eggs and minor assets.
Owensboro creditors of R. H. Pennington & Co. named J. R. Laswell trustee with a $25,000 bond after a meeting. The Citizens National Bank of Evansville circulated accusations against Pennington and sought control of the estate. Pennington denied influence, promised fair administration, and a full creditors list followed.
Chicago hearing before Interstate Commerce Special Examiner Fleming debated increasing the minimum shipment weight for Texas and Louisiana potatoes to 30 000 pounds. Shippers argued no change in conditions while Albert Miller & Co. cited higher shrinkage and product fragility at heavier loads, threatening market viability.
In Brawley California on November 26, reports indicate the coming cantaloupe deal in the Imperial Valley could equal or exceed last year. Major firms list thousands of acres, totaling about 6 955, with Crutchfield Woolfolk possibly adding 300 more. If American Fruit Distributors and Arthur Gregory stay out, in sight acreage nears 7 200. Ground works fast as field reps contract. George B. Lanham will represent Coyne Brothers of Chicago.
