Potatoes showed notable strength this week with demand active both locally and outside. Prices rose to a higher basis as holdings around Chicago declined and receipts at loading stations were lighter, signaling a tighter market and expected further gains amid a lighter crop than early estimates.
New York reports an export surge with 60,000 to 100,000 loaded cars idled west of the city awaiting steamship space. Freight congestion cripples shipments to Europe, reducing sailings and refrigeration capacity. Butter and apples face export delays as fruit traders reroute by truck. weekly export totals range from 64 to 95 million dollars. Roos and Kirschbaum of Savannah file for bankruptcy with assets of 11,181.08 and liabilities of 14,625.43.
A New York shipper accuses a seller named Dillon of underpaying apple prices. He claims he earned better prices for about 700 barrels and that a broker called crooks sold them in Reade Street. The letter also expresses support for The Packer and criticizes Dillon’s business practices.

Season totals show 5523 oranges and 606 lemons statewide. The Mercantile Exchange in New York plans a year end minstrel show and dance on the trading floor late December to replace the usual gala. Clarence Hager will preside as master of ceremonies.

New York officials discharged Jacob and Joseph Cohen, tied to the East River poultry business, after a year of heavy bonds in the Barnet Baff murder inquiry. They had been indicted for the prior assault on Allen T. Pearson, linked to the Carlot Live Poultry Shippers. James Moore, who confessed, was convicted and imprisoned. DA found insufficient evidence to convict the Cohens for Pearson’s assault or Baff’s murder.
The Apple Day prize committee in New York, chaired by W T Geroe of Smith & Holden, includes Arthur Miller of Miller Cummings and E N Loomis. They review prize entries from cities, with competition keen and film submissions arriving from Pittsburgh. They expect to finish early next week.
Wilson of the Department of Agriculture in Albany reports 3178.60 will be distributed among creditors who consigned goods to Richard B Brown Inc fruit and vegetable firm. The bonding company turned over funds to the commissioner under the Cole Law. Creditors who sold outright are excluded.
99 boxes of grapefruit shipped by J. R. Hickson Packing Co from Naranja Florida were seized in October for possible Food Act violations. Government inspectors and federal agents collected samples for acidity tests as the case heads to court. Hickson denies sweating or coloring and argues the fruit was fully mature when packed, with affidavits from inspectors and witnesses to support the claim.
Randolph Fruit Company ships the first two carloads of Navels from California orchards. The first car from Clavide Tulare county on Nov 14 tests eight to one sugar to acid and comes from C Talbot and D W McKenna. The second car from Naranjo’s H B Smith also tests well colored and inspected. Industry expects a strong demand and high prices despite a smaller crop this season. California Vegetable Shipments show 364 total cars from Santa Fe and Southern Pacific lines for opening period, with weekly totals of 171 cars.
Nashville Tenn November 19 Shipment of Thanksgiving turkeys is about as large as last year. The movement from Nashville will be six to eight cars. Shippers are paying 10 cents per pound.
