Outlook for Celery Crop in California

California celery shipments for 1916 17 were cut by freezes in the north reducing yields from 130 crates per acre in 1915 16 to 79 in 1916 17 and lowering carload averages. Growth in statewide acreage and a favorable outlook suggest higher shipments this year despite a car shortage. Major harvested counties include Contra Costa Sacramento San Joaquin Los Angeles and Orange with scattered areas totaling 6482 acres. Northern movement began late October to early November with El Monte Sacramento and Orange counties shipping a few cars. Southern California expects light early shipping with volume rising before Thanksgiving. A car per acre is the normal metric and ships may start at 180 crates per car due to the shortage.
