Fine outlook for the cantaloupe crop in California as shipments rise with 33 carloads moved by Friday and expected to reach 30 to 35 carloads daily by Sunday. Weather remains fine and melons are maturing in good shape.
California melon traders gather in vast force as 23,000 acres of cantaloupes flood the desert heat. Thirty distributors and five cash buyers push a high stakes sales push with 400 cars a day expected. Freight costs loom but quality and market readiness boost confidence and consumer demand. First shipments depart May 21 to Chicago and other cities amid strong advertising by major co operatives and shippers.
The Interstate Commerce Commission issued an order guiding telegraph firms on settling damage claims from service errors. It requires publishing rules capping liability for repeated messages at 500 per message and overall caps of 8000 per message, with value-based limits for valued messages. The ruling, effective July 13, 1921, does not affect preexisting filed claims.

The Packer will publish next week a watermelon crop review for commercial states with data on acreage by region, shipment car totals, varieties, movement timing, and other figures. Growers shippers and trade readers are urged to prepare advertising space and submit copy via local Packer offices.
Shippers estimate about 1,500 cars will be shipped this season in the Salt River Valley and surrounding districts, with roughly 3,500 acres planted including Mesa Glendale and Casa Grande areas. Crop conditions are good and growers plan spraying and shading to protect the crop as cool spring delays growth. expected harvest near the usual date with superior quality anticipated.

Stand is poor with some growers thinning and few blossoms. Harvest likely about July 26 with good prices and slow crate buying as freight rate reductions are anticipated. Firms including Stein Hardt Kelly American Fruit Growers and Gerrard report freezes reduced expectations and crop size.
Reports to The Packer indicate a nearly normal cantaloupe crop this year in Indiana Michigan Illinois and neighboring areas with some acreage reductions. Decker Indiana shows about 550 acres and around 200 cars slated for shipment starting July 15 with varieties packed in standards flats and ponies.
Official preliminary estimates indicate record shipments possible this year if weather remains favorable and markets hold. Frost damage last month hit some varieties, especially grapes, but strong eastern demand could determine final outcome.
Agricultural authorities report crop damage varying by fruit with grapes at about 70 percent of normal and peaches and apricots showing lighter yields. Cherries are lighter than last year and pears and plums suffer moderate losses. Prunes also damaged though detailed figures differ by region.
The Coachella Valley onion trade shifts to ocean transport, with nearly 60 rail cars loaded on steamers from Los Angeles to New York and Philadelphia. Savings of about 17,500 dollars versus rail rates are projected, as Wil save 0.50 per 100 pounds. The Texan and Henry Grove sail with hundreds of onion cars, while Extension of the emergency rate to June 30 is proposed to aid growers. California fruit outlook also discussed, with frost and crop projections for cherries and peaches across districts.
