J Sicignano a Harlem fruit and vegetable jobber closed up last week owing the New York trade about 5 000. He offered 25 percent in settlement which may be accepted. He started two years ago with Bicina whom he bought out and had about 3000 credit a year ago. He has no credit rating with the Fruit and Produce Trade Association.
Plans unite Pacific Coast fruit growers to shift shipments from rail to intercoastal steamers via Panama Canal. A Western Committee will coordinate refrigerated transport to 25 Atlantic Gulf ports, cutting rail tonnage and boosting USA Ship Board refrigeration capacity. Estimated 000 cars expected this season.

Cincinnati June 3 A letter from John J Esch member of the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington to T N Price & Co discusses freight rate concerns. Esch quotes that the Commission seeks full information to relieve shipping hardships and to understand factors behind price declines for growers. He notes differing views on whether rate reductions would boost traffic or help growers and acknowledges the complexity of the transportation problem and global context. Continued on Page 9A.
Washington June 3 The U S Supreme Court upheld that a common carrier remains liable for losses in shipment during the unloading period from cars. The ruling affirms a lower court decision in a suit over a judgment involving twenty three dollars and costs.
President Harding met with Interstate Commerce Commission members in Washington to discuss downward revisions in freight rates, focusing on necessities and possible changes to fruit shipping costs.
