Lansing May 24 a radical proposed law would regulate farm product profits by setting maximum prices charged by hotels for eggs potatoes beef and cabbage relative to farm prices. The measure would force price ceilings such as 12c for a pound of beef and 2c per pound for cabbage, with further details continued on page 23
The North Carolina potato deal began in a limited way with about 60 cars shipped from the Washington region. A heavier week is forecast for the 27th with 500 cars, while full stride is unlikely before the week of June 3. Digging starts after June 1 as sections north of Washington begin, moving into Elizabeth City and Norfolk, then toward the Eastern Shore, with South Carolina nearing full shipment as the season progresses.
Kansas City May 24. Following a late week meeting of the Western Fruit Jobbers Association general committee in charge of plans for the January convention, committees have been completed and preliminary work is well under way. R W Gees chairs the committee. chairmen report progress as they summon members to finalize personnel and organize for the event.
In Los Angeles on May 24 independents led by American Fruit Growers and Mutual Orange Distributors won a partial victory as prorate committees were restrained from functioning. Hearings before Superior Judge Emmet Wilson continued as plaintiffs and defendants argued that the California Prorate Act unlawfully delegated judicial and legislative powers to the commission and prorate committees.
A New York code committee moves to tighten market access rules. Beginning next month, entry before opening hours to piers docks or sales sections will require a signed pass from the employer. Violations face penalties under new code regulations as passes are issued to limit early access.
The first straight car of Georgia peaches for the season arrived Friday morning at Gridley Maxon & Co. in Chicago. Shipped from Newnan, Georgia the Mountain Rose variety came in half bushel baskets. Quality was good and stock moved readily marking an earnest market entry after several years.
West Tennessee tomato acreage is about ten percent larger than 1934, with 7 500 to 8 000 acres typical. Weather has been favorable though some late southern plantings slowed early growth. Shipping is expected to begin around June 25, with a peak around July 1 and 1 800 to 1 900 cars forecast if weather remains favorable.
From El Centro California May 24 Imperial valley cantaloupe shipments run light as winds in March and April reduced the crop. Day temperatures near 100 degrees with cool nights. Some growers picked light midweek and a larger harvest is expected early next week. Shipments may rise to 75 to 100 cars daily by mid to late next week.
New York reports confirm France will raise citrus duties sharply. Grapefruit duties rise from 85 cents to 2.40 dollars per box with set quotas on grapefruit and oranges. No fixed timetables announced, but the 300 percent increase precedes talks on concessions with the United States.
Hammond La May 24 Acreage in green peppers in Louisiana shows a 25 percent rise from last year and with favorable market conditions 400 to 800 cars may be shipped this year. Movement has started and should rise by June 1 with a peak expected around June 6 to 15 according to Ted Carfield. Weather has been favorable for the crop.
Ed Q. Oetgen proclaims the Dixie Stores Supply Company as his new produce venture in Atlanta after receiving a USDA license stating sole ownership. The Packer notes years of controversies and prior swindling penalties, yet he resumes operations with renewed effort despite criminal history and shipper complaints.
Jacksonville Florida May 24 The 1935 watermelon season in Florida is under way with many cars shipping daily. Operators are optimistic noting early movement and heavy volume despite potential market swings. Leesburg became the main deal center around May 15 and South Georgia plans earlier melon movement than usual. Ideal spring weather supports early, high quality melons and a slight acreage rise, especially in north Florida and central regions.
Palisade and North Fork district peach orchards survived winter in fine condition and a good crop is in prospect. Heavy mountain snows assure irrigation water while improved orchard care boosts quality. Blooming aligned with normal timing. carrot movement expected around August 20 in Palisade and September 5 in North Fork. Projected yields: about 1500 to 1800 carloads in Palisade and 350 to 500 in North Fork.
Paonia Colorado May 24 The merger of Paonia Fruit and Supply Company and Union Fruit Company, two longtime North Fork shipping firms, is official. The combined entity may use Union Fruit and Supply Company or another name. officers include Fred W. Powell and W. H. Baker, with Lew A. Grove in executive and field roles.
Onancock Virginia May 24 preparations are underway for the first annual Eastern Shore Potato Blossom Festival at Keller fair grounds May 29 and 30 under Accomac Post 28 American Legion. Miss Adelaide Wise Ames is crowned Queen Eastern Shore I with Miss Gertrude Chance maid of honor in a multi town and school court of honor. Distinguished guests including Governor George C. Peery Senator Harry Flood Byrd and Congressman S Otis Bland are invited. The two day program features a colorful baby parade coronation vaudeville horse racing baseball speaking events and more.
Cool conditions delay Imperial Valley cantaloupe ripening as California growers boost melon plantings northward. Kern and Tulare counties report blossoming acreage with good growth. Porterville honey dens and honey balls expand, Mendoza district near Fresno expects about 700 acres split between Persians and cantaloupes. Dos Palos Los Banos area Merced county counties show strong honeydew increases totaling around 1,000 acres.
Thirty five members of the Colorado Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association met at Lakewood Country Club for a dinner and business meeting led by President Fred Green. They discussed the entry of Triway Brokerage Company into Denver’s jobbing business and outlined plans to sue the chain organization under the Sherman Anti-Trust law in the near future.
