The industry seeks a strong finish with 8,000 to 16,000 cars expected as buyers urged to stay engaged.
The U S Department of Agriculture updates the 37 380 acre early cantaloupe program with Imperial Valley California leading at 35 800 acres and yields at 6 444 000 crates. Florida Georgia and Texas lower Rio Grande projects show 34 000 72 000 and 74 000 crates respectively. Last year total was 6 082 000 crates. this year projected at 6 624 000 crates.
Asherton Texas May 14 ideal weather conditions prevail in the Texas onion district. Quality and condition are very good according to Claude A Brown. Buying is more active with large operators purchasing blocks of carloads. Brown estimates around 1500 cars of U 8 No 1 yellows unshipped.
Jacksonville reports Florida truck crop shipments are about half of last season with 12 823 cars moved to end of last week versus 24 904 a year earlier. Peppers cucumbers beans tomatoes celery beets and green corn moving. potatoes expected to ship out by end of May as Irish potatoes go off fields rapidly.
El Centro California May 14 old company of Leahy Garguilo formerly doing business in Los Angeles and the Imperial Valley filed a bankruptcy petition showing liabilities of 163340 and assets of 2878. Large creditors include L Stevens Palms Calif 12525 California Pine Box 7419 Flageteff Lumber Company 18649 Buffalo.
Edward Garguilo and R E Leahy filed petitions, noting Garguilo’s personal liabilities at 162 340 with assets 28 428 and Leahy’s at 164 751 with assets 38 428. Creditors include Maniello Bros and Myerson of New York, Rich man and Samuels of New York, plus Distributing Company. The old 1922 grape deal triggered the collapse after years of attempts to avoid bankruptcy. Garguilo Co. operates in the Wholesale Terminal Building, Los Angeles, with Leahy’s HQ in Calipatria.
Market reports show irregular trading for onions in New York with Texas onions at 6 to 7 dollars per crate and Bermudas steady. Cantaloupes in Chicago markets faced unseasonable cool weather, with 15 to 30 car shipments daily, prices easing but high, and Imperial Valley and Mexican varieties quoted across crates.

Georgia Exchange data dated May 1 show estimated peach production for the season at 13,600 cars to be shipped by rail. The estimate, from Cincinnati, Ohio, was circulated as of May 14.

St Paul Minnesota May 14 Dr R B Harvey and associates at University Farm have completed experiments using ethylene gas to ripen cantaloupes tomatoes and bananas The work suggests ethylene ripening and celery blanching will soon be important in the industry A report by Dr Harvey is printed on the editorials page of The Packer Experiments were also conducted by J T Rosa at University Farm Davis California and Dr R P Hibbard at East Lansing Michigan Information to date is available at those sites
In Rocky Ford Colorado the Arkansas Valley estimates for cantaloupes jump from 9000 to 11500 acres driven by beet contract troubles. Honey Dew shares total about 2000 acres with 135 percent or more moisture, signaling a bumper crop. Contracts from major buyers are noted around Las Animas Swink Ordway and Rocky Ford amid strong early movement prospects.
Old potatoes in New York yards this week were weak with slow movement and limited buying. About 150 cars in the yards Thursday offered Maine stock at 7 to 7.50 per 180 pounds bulk and 5.50 to 5.50 per 150-pound bag while shipments declined and much was consigned. Hastings Florida potato shipments look strong and expect a season wrap by May 22 with prices around 10 to 10.50 per barrel. carrot shipments from Hastings exceeded demand, many orders wired but cars scarce.
Washington May 14 The secretary of agriculture Jardine announced a voluntary government registration plan for those marketing fruit and vegetables. Participation is optional for shippers and dealers with protests already raised by some groups. The plan, to be issued in a revised pamphlet, is voluntary and not mandatory for the trade.
Frisco Railroad projects 2,513 cars of strawberry shipments for 1926 along Missouri Arkansas and Oklahoma lines. Ozark receives 395 cars, Monett 200, with detailed stop list including Mansfield Van Buren Rudy Mountainburg Prairie Grove Lincoln Johnsons Springdale Lowell Rogers Centerton Hiwasse Gravette Avoca Garfield Peirce City Ritchey Granby Seneca Racine Wentworth Sarcoxie Webb City Joplin Carthage Aurora Marionville Logan Billings Republic Bolivar Humansville Dunnegan Springfield Ozark Chadwick Seymour Mtn Grove Marshilela Niangua Crocker Lebanon and others. Total remains to be finalized.
Washington DC May 14 The monthly report from the Bureau of Agricultural Economics United States Department of Agriculture shows cold storage holdings of apples as of May 1 1926 totaling 619000 barrels versus 504000 barrels on May 1 1925 and a five year average of 586000 barrels. It lists 2779000 boxes up from 1811000 last year and a five year average of 2056000 boxes. Bushel baskets 28000 versus 117000 on May 4 1926.
Dallas May 14 Overton Fruit Co a Dallas fruit house filed a voluntary petition in bankruptcy this week owners George and Earl Overton say they owe over 5000 with assets under 500 due to December purchases and 4500 losses from Abilene branch they blame bad buys and unpaid goods against creditors including Reo Motor Co Northwestern Shipper local railroads and a broker among others the firm specialized in tomatoes grapes apples and citrus fruits.
A New York market report shows cantaloupes steady at times and declining at others. Prices varied by size with jumbo at about 8.9 dollars and standards around 7 to 7.8, ponies near 5.5 to 6.6, flats around 2.75 to 3.25, receipts from Imperial Valley expected to rise next week.
Virginia strawberries reached New York from the old Dominion on Wednesday in small crates and poor condition. Louisiana and North Carolina berries continued to move, with North Carolina the largest shipper. Prices varied widely from 16 to 30 cents per quart, while top Louisiana berries fetched 14 to 15 cents per pint.
