In Pittsburgh on May 7 the Sherman plan for voluntary registration of fruit and vegetable dealers splits opinion. Some receivers and jobbers praise departmental cooperation, while many dealers oppose government involvement and fear loss of independence.
Auction sales in New York on May 7 report softer grape fruit demand and a generally easier market despite attractive prices. Porto Rico pineapples moved freely, 36s and smaller weaker though best fruit strong. oranges from Porto Rico steady to higher in some grades. California navels and Valencias show mixed quality with prices shifting. lemons abroad partly unsold with large carryovers.
Staff correspondence from Ekogee Oklahoma on May 7 notes potato acreage roughly flat in Eastern Oklahoma but down in Western Arkansas. The stand is below last year and yield is expected to be much less than 1926. Estimates based on current outlook suggest 2000 to 2200 cars, with Triumphs dominating plantings. Fort Smith district shows differing opinions on acreage for the season.
Oscar Weisenstein 56, a Louisville produce merchant and co owner of John Weisenstein & Co died Sunday morning after December illness from infected teeth. He leaves widow Mrs Bessie Weisenstein, his mother Mrs Kathryn Welsenstein and brother John Welsenstein. He was a Mason and active in lodges and clubs.
Arkansas and other regions influence Oklahoma potato districts with slight acreage changes. Experts note a fair stand but lighter yield than last year, though not as abnormal as the prior season. Home grown seed accounts for about 16 to 20 percent, with Northern seed making up the rest.
Cantalope shipments from the Imperial Valley began in May with 84 cars moved by May 5 and 8 shipments on the 8th. Early crates show good quality and most May shipments will be the H B variety. Weather cooler this week may slow shipments but Eastern markets expect a sharp rise. trade remains optimistic despite mildew damage and larger acreage.
Chicago May 7 Prices for strawberries eased as demand remained weaker than expected. Daily arrivals reached 15 to 25 cars with mornings seeing dry conditions. Best Louisiana shipments sold at 4.25 per 24 pin vent crates while stale stock moved slowly at 3 to 3.25.

The Arkansas strawberry crop is finally under way with late movement due to a cold spring. Growth regions include Southwest Arkansas around Horatio, White County, Van Buren, and Northwest Arkansas near Fayetteville and Springdale. Growers report excellent conditions and better quality than previous years, with roughly 400-car production in White County and larger acreage in the Van Buren Northwest Arkansas districts.
Chicago reports confusion over old potato receipts with uneven grading. Prices vary by grade and origin, as Wisconsin Minnesota and Michigan stocks struggle against better graded lots. New potatoes from Texas Florida show rising output but less price decline.
The asparagus market remained very strong in New York with lighter California receipts and increased shipments from South Jersey Delaware and South Carolina. Georgia asparagus was limited and of poorer quality while South Carolina and Jersey fancy stock sold from 5 to 6 dollars with colossals up to 7 dollars. Choicé grades brought 3.50 to 4.50 and California stock sold on a similar basis.
An involuntary bankruptcy petition was filed against Charles Pape trading as Charles Pape & Co. He disappeared last October owing banks about 200000 dollars with debts mainly to banks. Petitioners include Henry Hessling owed 15000 dollars and the Corn Exchange Bank owed 10000 dollars.
Dave Weisberg of Cleveland was convicted of issuing a $750 check to defraud brokers Matz & Williams and sentenced to one to three years in an Ohio prison. He is at liberty on a $3,500 bond pending appeals, with sentence suspended until May 11 for error proceedings. Weisberg has years in poultry fruit and vegetable trades and recent watermelon business dealings.
Washington May 7 the American Warehousemen's Association proposed standard terms for the warehouse industry were adopted at a conference with shippers bankers railwaymen and warehousemen in cooperation with the Department of Commerce The plan aims at uniformity across the largely unregulated field and includes twelve minor wording changes and a 30 day notice clause for charge increases The standard is based on the Atlantic City conference and is expected to make warehouse receipts more valuable as negotiable instruments The effort reflects a broader Commerce Department push for uniform practices across industries with minimal waste
Chadbourn North Carolina lists the annual strawberry festival on May 12 with berry exhibits educational displays and a conservation demo. Noted speakers include Gov Thomas G McLeod Gen A J Bowley Gov Richard Byrd and Dr E C Brooks. Tours to berry fields and to Lake Waccamaw precede an auction in town then a ball at Myers warehouse with Fort Bragg orchestra.
On May 7 New York reports the first car of California cantaloupes shipped by S A Gerrard Co arrived and was sold on the docks. Miller Cummings Co received a mixed car from ten shippers for eight receivers. Prices ranged from 5 6 for flats to 14 16 for 45s with Mexican flats also offered at 2 50 for 12s and 2 25 for 9 to 15. Beginning next week car lots are expected daily and receipts may rise.
The Pittsburgh Produce Credit Association held its annual officers and directors election at the Produce Exchange Club in Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon. Charles A. Muehlbrenner was re elected president J C Hungerman was named vice president William DeMiller treasurer E J Balzer secretary and manager. Six directors were chosen to serve two year terms: Charles A Muehlbrenner Harry Smith Clarence Miller Paul Dunn E A Hal and Joseph A Mervis.
Kansas City shippers petition railroad vice presidents to enforce bond rules on deliver ies, demanding immediate notices to agents and affidavits from consignees to verify shipments. They allege carriers allow delayed or fraudulent use of consignee bonds, harming shipper drafts and bank payments.
Pittsburgh May 7 McCann Co Inc dealers in pure food products deny ties to a chain of worthless checks. The firm states it has no connection with McCann Co of Pittsburgh and requests no one cash checks from any of their representatives.
Los Angeles May 7. O W Hooker, a broker dealing in apples and pears, sails on a three week trip through all California and Western districts from the Southern California to the Canadian line. Hooker has resided in Los Angeles about 14 years after four years in the Northwest apple district. He represents several leading western accounts in the apple and pear districts.
