The Melon Distributors Association held its 23rd annual convention at the Atlanta Biltmore hotel with leaders Horace H. Herr W. G. Meal and J. D. McCartney addressing crop conditions and industry issues. The gathering mourned the deaths of President Luke J. Leonard Vice President RB Neal and Secretary R. H. Pennington over the past year as Mayor Hartsfield was to welcome attendees. Aubrey Milam of Green Milam gave the welcome in Atlanta with D. H. responding.
Grand Rapids reports show reduced rail shipments as lower freight rates cut profits for produce truckers. Jacob J Ball of the Grand Republic Wholesale Market notes fewer loads of southern fruits and vegetables on the local market this winter, with truckers hauling Michigan apples onions potatoes south and oranges grapefruit tangerines back, limited to one or two loads of citrus.
Wallace N C April 30 heavy rains have delayed North Carolina strawberry fields for six days with half the week’s damage minimal. Wallace growers pack in 24 quart crates. total crop about 300000 crates, 35 percent Blakemores, rest Missionaries. Peak movement around May 10, with keen bidding and quality yielding prices from 2 75 to 4 45 per crate.

Kansas City April 30. A car of Arizona strawberries from Phoenix Salt River valley went on sale, the first from that state. Twenty cars have moved from the district to date with planting increasing. The Klondyke fruit, packed in 12 pint flats, sold quickly via Brown & Lee to Garrett Holmes & Co and Helm Produce Co. Brown & Lee expect more shipments this season.
Lansing April 30 Michigan lawmakers moved toward adjournment as the Watson Tomlin fair trade bill passed both houses and heads to the governor for signature The measure, backed by the Michigan Retail Grocers Association and endorsed by the Michigan Association of Creamery Owners and Managers, would let manufacturers fix resale prices and affect chain stores and discount retailers If enacted it would curb price wars and affect dairy and other sectors amid a broader push for tax raises and regulatory action
Leon K. Stein of L. K. Stein & Co Minneapolis and L. K. Stein Taube Inc Kansas City died this morning in New Orleans. Stein was widely known across the United States and his friends will be shocked by the death.
Hammond Louisiana April 30 Ted Carfiel a noted strawberry and bean operator of this point has been urged from Colorado to be on hand after his Louisiana shipping season to engage in his wild horse deal His agents there indicate strong potential demand for wild horses this season His group controls a large tract of prime wild horse country in Colorado but he may delay the deal to stay in Louisiana through the berry and bean season.
Springfield Illinois April 80 The strawberry crop in Illinois may be a little better than earlier anticipated says H M Newell of the state department of agriculture The Allin district escaped flood damage with little or no harm The late spring kept the pack slow but movement to begin the week of May 10 first shipments expected from the lower districts around Villa Ridge Ulin and Pulaski Moisture fell early in the week and weather cooled
Salinas California April 30 Gradually increasing supplies and strong demand define this week in the Salinas Watsonville lettuce deal as the seven month season opens Iceberg shift. Fives reach 3 a crate with sixes at 2 or more while about 30 packing houses report good to excellent stock. District now yields half fives and half sixes with shipments averaging 37 cars weekly total 287 by Monday.
Humboldt Tennessee April 40 After weeks of tireless work the fourth West Tennessee Strawberry Festival opens May 5 6 with a daylight fireworks display and ends May 7. The event billed as the Souths greatest strawberry show attracts nationwide publicity through news agencies radio and the Strawberry Annual distributed in 20 states. The festival grounds are at Humboldt High School and the program promises day and night thrills including Johnny Hamp Orchestra at the Queens Ball.
Crystal Springs Mississippi April 30 despite April 26 start date some operators shipped three cars of peas with cabbage mixed on April 23 next day seven more peas cars. Monday April 29 saw 22 peas cars and cabbage mixed shipments. movement dipped Tuesday. Rain and cool weather slowed pea maturity while cabbage began to loosen rather than head. Peas movement expected to peak late this week into next. demand may outpace May supply. Shippers have orders though cabbage remains scarce in raw form. Prices opened at 30 and rose to 45 a ton. Tomatoes show progress with blooms in second and third clusters, vines healthy. Early season outlook for June 1 beans favorable. optimism high among growers and shippers for cabbage and tomatoes.
New Orleans April 30 The potato deal gains headway in early Louisiana sections with peak expected around May 24 depending on digging weather Early shipments possibly 3500 to 6000 cars with a general state movement near 4000 cars Alexandria area 1000 to 1300 New Roads 600 to 700 Winnfield north of Alexandria over 300 and other regions including Houma Lockport Thibodaux Raceland and more.
Pittsburgh April 30 Officers of the newly incorporated American National Cooperative Exchange were announced at the board meeting. The officers include Frank W. Hussey president and W H Baggs general manager. Directors span several states and include Thomas A. Robertson and Dudley Bagley among others, with offices in Pittsburgh beginning May 1.
Anthony J Canale president of D Canale & Co. died of a heart attack at 1 50 am aged 59 after attending a wedding. He survived by his widow two sons two daughters and two sisters and was a prominent civic figure in Memphis noted for aiding local fruit dealers.
Considerable activity was noted in California potato shipments this week from Shafter. Edison potatoes show daily shipments nearing the predicted peak of 26 cars within a few days. Rail and truck movements total around 75 cars by Wednesday, with truck shipments more than doubling. Rail carrot shipments also ran 20 to 24 cars daily earlier in the week. Quality improved from first diggings, with Northern Pacific coast prices averaging 3.25 to 3.50 per cwt. Early week prices to growers averaged 1.75 to 2.00 per cwt for U S No 1 grade potatoes, sacked, but a paying price had not yet been established.
R G Phillips secretary of the International Apple Association criticized Ex Parte 115 on proposed rises in fifth class from 85 to 371/4 percent of first class and sixth class from 27 1/4 to 37 1/2 percent, noting the hearing held April 3, 1937 in Washington under Commissioner Aitchison. The joint case was presented by American Fruit and Vegetable Shippers Association, Western Fruit Jobbers Association and International Apple Association, covering New England to Missouri. Los Angeles reports consumer advertising for iceberg lettuce is lifting demand this year. The Western Growers Protective Association says 50 000 retail stores nationwide are tied into the campaign, with heavy increases in consumption noted after March 20.
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration announced a marketing agreement and order for Utah onions became effective April 26, 1937. It aims to adjust out of state shipments by grade and size, with a Control Board of seven members representing growers and shippers. Costs are borne pro rata by handlers. the program was developed at Utah growers and shippers’ request and signed by handlers representing over 90 percent of 1935 Utah onions.
Donald Dutcher formerly in the brokerage business in Columbus, Ohio, and later in Rochester, has asked for a discharge in bankruptcy. A hearing is set for May 24. The bankrupt reports no assets of value and the case is closed, per Nelson P. Sanford, referee in bankruptcy.
By April 30 a severe drought has ravaged vegetables in the coastal bend. Early cucumber plantings are ruined while mid and late crops may recover only with a 1.5 to 2 inch rain. Shipments could reach 300 to 400 cars if rain arrives, but dry weather presages a light movement. onions face poor yields, with total shipments maybe 500 to 600 cars. In Wilson and Karnes counties onion plantings were already below last year, moisture shortage will further cut yields.
Hammond La April 30 The big Louisiana strawberry deal ended a heavy shipping week and expects another of similar size as 1 050 cars left by April 25 and 1 143 on Monday. Through May 1 total shipments near 2 000 cars with about 1 000 more likely. Prices at auction averaged 1.51 for 143 cars and 1.46 for 124 cars. Demand across eastern northern western markets rises with good quality.
Yakima event brings 160 plus apple growers and shippers from Yakima Wenatchee Okanogan Medford Seattle and Hood River valley to honor Fred Eberle retiring after 32 years in Yakima fruit business and 25 with Horticultural Union. Speakers praise his work and a new Wenatchee Blossom Festival invitation is announced. A Mystic Order of Apple Knockers reunion and the unveiling of Chief Apple Knocker provided the dinner’s highlight.
Chicago merchants shifted the annual potato trade from the Wood Street Terminal to the Chicago Produce Terminal this week and will operate there through early September for spring and summer deals. Washington news reports the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad sought ICC exemption from long and short haul rules for citrus carloads from Texas to Denver.
Washington dispatch reports the Commodity Exchange Administration found no evidence of concerted effort to depress potato prices on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange during March 8 to 17, 1987. The commission noted low futures volume relative to spot trade and that futures activity likely reflected hedges and expectations from the rising old potato prices and new arrivals.
New York April 30 Representative Wright L Patman of Texas addressed the 16th annual convention of the United Independent Retail Grocers and Food Dealers Association attended by more than 10 000 retail grocers. He praised the Robinson-Patman Act signed June 19 1936 noting it protects the weak against the strong and will be vigorously enforced by the Federal Trade Commission. He said no amendments are needed and warned against weakening the law, listing three fold damages as a feared penalty.
Chadbourn North Carolina reports the strawberry market active after a hail storm missed the area. L. Tate, manager of the local block, estimates a total crop of 175000 crates for the season with peak daily movement 12000 to 15000 crates around May 15. Buyers from local and out of town are present now.
