Loxley Alabama April 23 Baldwin county potato deal starts with early trucks and a carlot. Red Bliss Triumphs dominate the field with limited Irish Cobblers as movement begins ahead of the main run noon May 3. Weather has been favorable and quality and yield expected to rise into June.
Humboldt Tennessee April 28 Plans for the Fourth Annual West Tennessee Strawberry Festival in Humboldt on May 5 6 and 7 are nearly complete. Twenty committees have shaped a robust program and the Strawberry Annual official publication is now in circulation. The festival opens with a horse show on the first day at 9 a m and continues with a full slate of events through May 7.

A discussion on how inflated promises mislead contracting parties and hinder deals. Dishonest misrepresentation, especially by terminal market operators and some shippers, damages confidence, risks shipments, and ultimately ruins business if truths are not upheld.
Good quality lettuce from the Salinas-Watsonville district begins its 1937 season with shipments gradually rising as sheds open. While some racks show dirty or ribby leaves, overall quality far exceeds earlier expectations and most stock is expected to grade No 1.
In Kansas City on April 23 the Missouri House approved Bill 228 to regulate itinerant truckers by a 102 to 14 vote and sent it to the Senate Ways and Means Committee. The measure, sponsored by the Associated Southwest Country Elevators, mirrors similar bills in Nebraska Illinois and Colorado among others. The first crate of Imperial Valley cantaloupes for the 1937 season was shipped from El Centro to President Roosevelt.
Bulk plantings of the Imperial Valley anticipate strong melon sales this season with the 45 variety praised for sweetness and quality. Analysts note production and consumer demand as key factors, crediting Dr. Ivan C. Jagger for innovations and citing extensive cantaloupe acreage in the valley.
The Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports the 1928-32 Florida and lower Rio Grande Texas early potato crop is forecast at 4 436 000 bushels, below 1986 2 807 000 and far under the five year average of 8 833 000. Texas shipments are mainly Bliss Triumph and moving in solid carlots.
The Bermuda onion movement from the Laredo district began April 7 but was slow, with only 40 cars moved by April 19 compared with 91 in 1926. Total Texas shipments in 1936 reached 9 412 carloads. by April 19 this year 618 carloads had moved, 569 from Raymondville. The Federal Bureau of Markets opened a Laredo field office April 15 led by J. C. Keller, issuing daily bulletins with market data.
The value for duty on asparagus imported into Canada from Ottawa to Quebec and westward is fixed at 4.25 cents per pound from April 9 1937. Bona fide purchases in transit to the buyer in Canada before April 17 1937 and entered by April 27 1937 are exempt from this valuation.
The Mobile county shipment plan forecasts potatoes moving in early May with 500 cars of Bliss Triumph potatoes and 26 to 50 cars of beans starting May 6 to 10. Shipping points include Mobile and Theodore as supplies shrink.
Harlingen Texas April 23 The spring tomato deal in the lower Rio Grande valley is on the first car of the season shipped Tuesday by J R Paxton of Mercedes from his McAllen packing plant. More cars were shipped this week with growth expected May 1.
Chicago officials report committees named for the International Apple Association convention to be held August 10 to 13. William Garfitt chairs the executive slate with Cumming Gad ding and Berner among others. Advance reservations are already arriving.
Celery shipments began in the Venice district with first cars dispatched Monday. Weather delays reduced Los Angeles County acreage to about 1,000 acres, seed stem reported in Venice and Oxnard fields. Despite seed stem, much celery shows good quality and shipments are expected to rebound. one large shipper had loaded about 380 cars by Wednesday.
Meyer Schuman Company announced on Thursday that Ben Aaron has severed ties with the firm. Aaron now serves as vice president of Shapiro Brothers Inc a carrot distributor of western vegetables with 17 years in the trade.
Minnesota lawmakers and Governor Elmer Benson enacted a law requiring yearly compulsory inspection of all potatoes shipped in Minnesota. Effective September 15, every car must bear a federal state inspection certificate showing classification. Growth areas like Hennepin County sought to avoid inspection during July to September but supporters expect quality crops to pass. Fred Behling Leo H Wright and Senator Henry C. Stiening led the drive amid concerns of misbranding in previous grading.
The Bureau of Agricultural Economics forecast 1937 Bermuda and Creole onion output in Louisiana Texas and California at 2 297 000 sacks versus 3 302 000 in 1936 and 2 308 000 in 1928–32 average. The Texas Bermuda crop is 32 percent below 1936 but 6 percent above the five year average.
Edison California April 23. Carlot movement of potatoes began with plans for about 25 cars daily by month end. Lug movement started last weekend with shipments to the Pacific Northwest. First scarlet potatoes shipped Wednesday in 50 pound sacks. 100 pound bags not yet used. Yields range 200 to 500 logs per acre, below usual. Shafter-Wasco district reports no change in maturity. weather favorable and planting progressing. Mosaic confirmed but scope unknown.
Chicago April 23. C Arthur Weaver and F William Morf partners of C H Weaver & Co completed 48 years with the firm. Both began with the company on April 17 1889. The house was founded by C H Weaver on October 4 1863 and remains a leading national firm with long continuous operation.
Chadboo announces Klondyke strawberries now move to northern markets. The local auction opened April 19 with 439 crates daily sales start at 10 am. Early offerings were large and uniform. light rains hint at an excellent season with about 20 percent more volume than last year. Movement through April 21 totaled 749 crates.
Hammond La April 23 The big Louisiana strawberry deal is in full swing with shipments likely to last until May 20 and possibly into early June. Rain aided crops improving quality and plants show buds and blossoms. daily shipments expected 75 to 125 cars, with 63 cars sold Thursday at 1.72 per 24 pint crate and total 753 cars through Friday.
Washington April 23 preliminary acreage estimates for California Imperial and Florida in the two early watermelon areas show no change from growers intentions last month totaling 27 000 acres for this year. Acreage is 15 percent above 1936 but 35 percent below the five year average 1928 to 1932. Imperial valley acreage is unchanged while Florida shows a 22 percent rise though both states remain well under the five year norm. Shipping may begin in south Florida from Lee county during the last week of this month with Groveland Leesburg area starting in May. Stands and crop condition are generally good.

Crystal Springs Mississippi April 23 1937 Copiah county vegetable deal inaugurated when first cabbage car loaded with good quality stock. Weather delays and light rains aid hardening heads. Movement starts late April with heavy shipments from May 1 to 5. Tomato plants slow recover from cold but should open by June. Beans had seed rot but some fields show good stands. Hazlehurst and Crystal Springs report promising crops with June shipments likely.
Mobile Alabama April 23 the 10 million dollar ocean terminal opened its new cold storage warehouse and fruit terminal with capacity for 250 cars. The five story concrete steel and brick building houses freezers and coolers and features modern refrigerating equipment. Manager A A Richards leads operations. the fruit terminal is to be completed in early summer for coastwise and import produce.
