Little AAA Measure Proposed for Arizona
Phoenix Arizona January 20 A bill to create a Little AAA law for Arizona is to be introduced in the state Legislature. The Citrus League approved an initial draft and sent it to counsel for rewrite. The measure would put producers under a prorate commissioner when 75 percent of producers representing 75 percent of orchard area request it. A California style rule requires two thirds of producers representing 51 percent of orchards to activate the plan. The trustee system previously left outsiders protected only by umbrella agreements with co trustees for Arizona and California grapefruit districts setting a $20 per ton price for the crop.

The Benjamin Goldstein Company, Inc., suing Seaboard Terminal & Refrigeration Company for 25,000 damages with interest since April 28, 1938, began trial before Judge Pecora in New York Supreme Court. The firm stored 22 years of Oregon onions at Seaboard in February last year and removed them in April, alleging improper temperatures and careless storage caused damage. Seaboard countered for 2,099.85 plus costs. Experts testified daily, with a decision expected mid next week.

Washington January 20 Peach growers voting in a December referendum on a proposed Georgia peach marketing agreement and order program fell short of the two thirds needed for final approval. Of about 340 voters representing 82 percent of 1938 production, 192 supported and 151 opposed the plan. Lakeland Fla Jan 20 After midnight yesterday the Florida Citrus Commission set a 32 cent price per box for grapefruit statewide under an emergency act. The move bases price on cost of production from last season versus this year’s projected 21 million boxes, with last season’s 14 million box crop averaging about 46.6 cents per box.
