United Produce Company Inc pled guilty to one count of a 15 count secret indictment in November 1936 for violations of Section 10 of the Interstate Commerce Act. Judge John C. Mahoney fined $1,000 in Providence Rhode Island. Other counts and charges tied to N P Warren and J H Fortin were quashed per motion with federal officials present. The indictment stemmed from alleged false damage claims on lettuce shipments to obtain refunds on freight charges.
The 14th annual meeting of the Canadian Fruit Wholesalers Association in Winnipeg featured floor discussions on industry changes and fruit and vegetable consumption. President A McCallum and officers from Montreal Toronto Halifax Winnipeg and Vancouver led sessions as jobbers shippers growers and brokers voiced plans for profitable handling of fresh produce. The convention emphasized problem solving over speeches and continued on page 22.
Jacksonville announces that State Commissioner of Agriculture Nathan Mayo will invoke the Growers Cost of Production Guarantee to declare an emergency and let the Citrus Commission fix a production cost based minimum price for grapefruit. A petition from grapefruit acreage owners is awaited, with costs estimated at 20 to 50 cents per box while prices as low as 10 cents per box have been reported.
Brownsville Texas reports that spring potato planting of Triumphs will be completed with favorable weather. Canvassed operators indicate planted acreage will be at least 50 percent below last season, with 175 to 200 cars of seed potatoes likely planted. Major plantings concentrate around Rio Hondo Los Fresnos and Benito, Brownsville.
Chicago reports the death of Philip H. Butler born July 27 1891 at Central Cold Storage Company where he helped open Chicago’s first warehouse in 1917 and arranged the first carload switching. He served in the U S Army 1917 1919 and died January 9 after a long illness. Funeral services were held January 11 at Mt Carmel cemetery.
Boston January 13 settlement of the truckmen strike came Wednesday as Local 25 members voted on a compromise. The new agreement provides 39 dollars for a 48 hour week, with overtime beginning at the end of each eight hour day, ending a week of halted perishable goods. Governor Saltonstall and Mayor Tobin had intervened as trade groups warned of food shortages. Continued on Page 22.
New York creditors meet after Ardeeco Produce Inc announces inability to pay in full. Debtor cites 11000 to 12000 owed with 3000 assets and offers 25 percent settlement with 10 percent cash, balance in notes over 18 months. If rejected, assets may be assigned to Ward W. Smith. An involuntary bankruptcy petition follows.
Imperial Valley lettuce shipments rise as rains slow harvests in the valley and Arizona loadings ease the market. Despite 235 cars on track, 75 cars shipped Tuesday with 66 inspected and 95 percent No 1 standard pack. Imperial and Yuma valleys remain key to supplying iceberg lettuce nationwide.
Miami Florida January 18 The South Dade early Irish potato deal is expected to begin around February 1 with active preparations underway. Weather has been dry reducing per acre production though potato quality remains high. Acreage planted is about 20 percent lower than last year, forecast to yield lower total tonnage. The annual potato tour on January 26 will attract many from across the south for field inspections and variety tests.
New York date Jan 13 Sam Weinstein fruit and vegetable jobber of 879 Washington Street holds a creditors meeting Monday at 2 p.m. in his attorney Julius Holzberg's office 40 East 42nd Street The aim is to inform creditors of the firm's condition and seek a 25 percent cash settlement offered last week The firm owes about 6000 to 30 creditors with assets of cash 200 and receivables 3500 of which 10 percent is collectible

With the United Fresh convention in Los Angeles January 24 to 27 and related events in San Francisco January 28 and 29, the issue aims to aid industry contacts and promote California offerings nationally. Cincinnati mourns the death of George B Riley at his home last Friday after a brief illness. He would have been 79 on March 7. A founder of Flatow Riley Co in 1891 and later a principal in Leonard Crosset Riley with James L Leonard and Walter B Crosset. Continued on Page 22.
