Growers warn high transportation costs will cut perishable crop production next year as current rates fail to cover costs. Letters to the railroad express concern that shipments are unprofitable and may force reduced outputs.
A national fre ight rate crisis threatens growers and shippers of perishable fruits and vegetables. High railroad charges curb shipments to big markets, risking next season's production as lettuce cabbage and other crops stay unharvested. Growers urge prewar or reduced rates to sustain supply and revenue.
Washington announces that railroads have withdrawn support for higher demurrage rates, ending a move to raise charges from $2 to $3 for early days and up to $10 for later days. The Interstate Commerce Commission said lack of agreement among carriers led to the suspension from January 1 to May 1.
New rate cuts reduce common storage and refrigerator space charges from New York to the United Kingdom. Apples and pears per barrel fall from 2.00 to 2.25 in storage and from 2.50 to 2.25 in refrigerator space. box rates drop to 60 cents per box. J Ellis Slater withdraws from the firm of Slater Piowaty Co in Chicago effective tomorrow. He plans no public announcement but indicates future propositions and continued involvement in the fruit and vegetable industry. The Piowaty family will assume control and operate under J Ellis Slater Piowaty Co name with broader wholesale jobbing outlet and street presence.
The Shippers' Agents Service Association met at the Staller Hotel in St Louis for a two day session January 14. Officers were elected and a policy change was adopted while dues were reduced and the group renamed to Fruit and Vegetable Brokers' Association. The presidentship passed to O E Spooner with HS Bawden as executive vice president and R H Pennington as secretary.
New York January 14 creditors seek Louis Campagna a longtime fruit and vegetable dealer who failed to open his West Street and Park Place shop. He was seen Saturday in a 1921 Cadillac with a young woman. The Fruit and Produce Association filed a bankruptcy petition and inventories indicate liabilities likely up to 20 000 dollars.
C W Banks of St Louis has been appointed general sales manager of the Southern Produce Company, Norfolk, Va, and will move soon. Previously with Georgia Fruit Exchange and J M Patterson Co, he later conducted his own business. The cooperative shipper, a large producer and consignee in New York, adopts a i o b selling plan aiming to market members’ output on a f o b basis this season.
The 29th annual convention met in Chicago with about 700 registrations as Frank Wagner and President Hearty addressed the key issue of transportation. William Mors of Chicago elected president with Chester Franzell and George York as vice presidents and Manley Richmond as treasurer. The group urged careful rate study and warned against blanket freight increases, stressing transportation's impact on production and distribution.
