Freight rate advances by railroads spark a scramble to keep equipment in service. Some railroad men privately admit a readjustment of rates on fruits and vegetables may be necessary to avoid service disruptions.
Railroad leaders and growers clash over high freight charges for perishable produce as traffic falls. Traders warn the fruit and vegetable industry may contract if rates stay high, with calls for rate readjustment to revive shipments and prevent losses to growers and railroads alike.
St Louis prepares for the National League of Commission Merchants convention with advance reservations strong. Chairman Louis Cicardi promotes entertainment while Jimmie Bawden leads publicity. Reception Committee of 34 under H G Hartman arranges transport and hotel coordination at Statler.
New York merchants will not send a full delegation to the National League of Commission Merchants meeting in St Louis. A small group from New York plans to travel by rail, with a few others choosing different arrangements.
C A Kerr of Chicago urges optimism to revive business morale. He criticizes calamity talk, blames easy money for three years of overconfidence, and calls for fresh air, pure thought, and disciplined effort to restore prosperity in the coming year.
Interstate Commerce Commission withdrew the tariff for diversions and re consignments after protests from fruit and vegetable shippers. An adjustment to the strike and freezing rule is planned by the American Railway Association and the National Industrial Traffic League. The commission had suspended schedules until March 31 and then ended the matter this week.

Louvis Wagner and Samuel Haber of Wagner and Haber fruit and vegetable firm were indicted by a grand jury in New York. They were arrested and held on $2,500 bail each after a dramatic failure in February that left about $25,000 worth of goods acquired in a single week. The pair, in business since April 1919, had claimed assets of $16,115 with liabilities of $2,500, and Haber owned a $4,900 Bronx Public Market equity.
Buffalo New York January 7. Shippers cautioned about William Jay Thomas a fruit and vegetable broker in the market. Years ago he sold oleomargarine and lately solicits as a broker in potatoes and produce. He is described as smooth talking and neglectful of obligations, often ignoring bills or explanations.
Kansas City reports the Fruit and Produce Club will hold its annual meeting and elect officers at the Hotel Baltimore on Saturday January 15. A business session will follow an evening luncheon in a second floor parlor.
Chicago January 7 A hearing set for January 21 on the proposed cancellation of apple storage in transit privileges in the Central Freight Association area has been indefinitely postponed. Trade interests say the question will not be pursued, and past carrier requests have been withdrawn or postponed.
Denver January 7 report outlines the 17th annual Western Fruit Jobbers Association meeting in Colorado Springs January 24 28 at Broadmoor Hotel. Highlights include Tuesday bureaus sessions entertainment tours golf and riding parties with annual banquet and ball. Leaders welcome attendees from Seattle to Colorado Springs with remarks on transport and industry topics and daily bulletin updates.
Arrangements for the American Fruit and Vegetable Shippers' Association convention at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago January 19 to 21 are nearly complete. The program includes addresses by George Livingston and G C Devol, committee reports, and a banquet with committee meetings on January 17 and 18 open to members for input. Members urged to reserve accommodations now by wiring Secretary Robert Cumming at 139 North Clark Street.
J L Branch of Lockport New York and partner in Anderson Johnson Branch praised The Packer for its campaign for lower freight rates. He urged lawmakers and rail authorities nationwide to read The Packer articles on wasted perishable goods and the need to reduce shipping costs to protect producers and consumers.
