Canal Through Mucklands of Michigan Fails to Get Approval
Hudsonville Michigan February 28 truck crop growers in muckland western Michigan praised news that the lake level canal planned from Grand Rapids to Lake Michigan via Holland has not gained approval by the board of army engineers after public hearings. Muckland owners argued the ditch would drain farms lower water tables ruin crops and that the project was unnecessary. Sponsors led by John Buys and backed by the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce claimed a 26 foot channel would serve lake and ocean going steamers with minimal cuts aside from Zeeland. The army engineers found the expected benefits insufficient to justify roughly ten million dollars for construction and maintenance. Grand Rapids shippers may appeal to Congress’s board of engineers of the rivers and harbors if dissatisfied.
