South Carolina Truck Law Upheld by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court upheld South Carolina's ban on advertising trucks above 20,000 pounds and on trucks wider than 90 inches on state highways. The ruling could shift interstate trucking to rail, as most interstate trucks are 96 inches wide. Florida argued the law would disrupt citrus fruit movement, while the Interstate Commerce Commission cited federal preemption.

Government money on short side of corn
The Chicago Tribune reported last fall that government funds were used to drive corn prices down. A board of trade probe found Farmers National Grain Corp., a dissolved cooperative, used taxpayer money to gamble on a falling market. It sold 2.46 million bushels for September while holding 640,000, short by 1.8 million, with one sixth of short interest charged to the firm. The piece ties this to Hoover era Farm Board efforts and Roosevelt administration continuities.
