Michigan Dedicates New Horticultural Building

Hast Lansing February 12. Pruning mature apple trees does not raise first year yield but improves quality. Prof Roy B Marshall of Michigan State College told the Michigan State Horticultural Society at its mid winter meeting. The Farrand orchard experiments in 1895 showed larger fruit size and better color from pruning, though yields were lower than unpruned trees. The society met tied to the dedication of a new 400000 dollar horticultural building, described as the nation’s finest horticultural lab and study building. Jason Woodman of Paw Paw traced Michigan horticultural development from 1800 plantings around Detroit to early peach trees near St Joseph after the Revolution and grape shipments to Chicago in 1840.
