A report from the Western Fruit Jobbers Association argues independent retailers failing could doom Jogber but urges no alarm. It contends trade will run more efficiently if jobbers cooperate in each market to render proper service to retail customers and boost demand for perishable foods.
In a Los Angeles meeting a Western Fruit Jobbers' official urged improving independent merchants through education and dealer service. Secretary William Garfitt summarized market surveys across Burlington Iowa Hutchinson Kansas Springfield Illinois Flint Michigan Sioux City Iowa Dallas Texas and outlined campaigns funded by local jobbers. The group stressed optimism about chain stores while valuing independent retailers and learning from large chains to strengthen the vast food distribution system.
New Orleans reports slight gains in local green vegetable supplies this week as shippers moved three to four cars from the area. Spinach and collard greens lead the movement, with beets, carrots, turnips, leeks and shallots among other items in early shipments. A solid car of escarole headed north last week alongside mixed loads.
Texas crop outlook rises after weekend rains on spinach cabbage beets and carrots with improved quality and yield prospects. Spinach likely to reach target tonnage. potatoes onions and coastal crops gain. Wharton-Eagle Lake planting may slow slightly. Movements include three cars beets 30 cars carrots and 35 cars beets and carrots mixed.
Laredo Tex Feb 10 In about a month Bermuda onion growers in the Laredo district will gear up for marketing the crop. Harvest and shipping are expected to begin around March 16 and run to late May. The crop is in good condition after cold spells though no firm carload total is set, with estimates between 1 000 and 1 200 carloads depending on pests. Shipping quotas will be prorated by the South Texas Onion Growers Association after the initial 1 000 carloads are dispatched, a scheme used for the past three years.

El Centro California February 10 Lettuce deals in the Imperial Valley moved slowly due to over supply and weaker markets. Despite smaller acreage a heavy yield may lift output near last year’s level while quality remains weaker with mildew spots and limited 0.8 carload lots. Cantaloupes and watermelons are being planted. jobbers return from Los Angeles conventions. Arizona acreage unclear and shipping expected to continue for six weeks.
The West Coast Clearing House Association of Nogales Arizona has written The Packer asserting a good West Coast of Mexico tomato crop. They report new harvests undamaged by rain, replanted acreage, steady daily carloads, and ideal January to March conditions supporting a strong second crop.
The St Louis and O Fallon Railway Company filed in District Court an appeal to the United States Supreme Court from a recent decision by three federal judges upholding an Interstate Commerce Commission valuation order for rate making and recapture of excess earnings. The case, called the biggest lawsuit in history, tests principles and methods used in railroad valuation, with forty allegations of error cited in the appeal.

New York February 10. For the week ending February 4 apples exported from the United States and Canada totaled 65 418 barrels and 289 499 boxes. Exports to date reach 1 764 453 barrels and 4 322 952 boxes versus 3 909 351 barrels and 6 920 120 boxes at the same date last year.

Washington D C Feb 10 at a Tariff Commission session growers and onion association reps from across the country joined importers and foreign producers to urge a higher duty on onion imports. The hearing follows a 1926 investigation into production costs with a 100 page report. The commission will draft findings for the President to decide on any duty change.

New York agents report light dock offerings this week with good stock in demand. Middle Western yellows sold from 2.80 to 3.00 per 100 pounds, and poorer stock from 2.25 to 2.75. New York February 10 Monday is a closed holiday in the fruit and produce trade as Lincoln's birthday falls on Sunday this year. Railroads and banks will suspend deliveries and openings, reducing activity for perishables. A Madrid cable reports Spain's orange crop at 88 million boxes, with 12 million exported so far and 28 million expected, season ending by May.
A bankruptcy petition has been filed in Los Angeles against the I. L. Taylor Company on February 10. The action initiates proceedings to liquidate assets and settle debts under the applicable statutes. Creditors may file claims within the court prescribed period and partake in the proceeding.
California Navel sales rose by up to $1 per box over last week as 65 cars were shipped with good to fancy quality. Florida oranges remained steady with 216 size and other sizes gaining 15 to 35 cents per box amid light receipts. California lemons stayed strong with best 300s fetching 6.05 to 7.75, 360s 6.25 to 7.45 and choice around 5.35 to 6.60. Florida grapefruit and tangerines showed mixed shifts. grapefruit fluctuated while 11 car port arrivals boosted prices. tangerines gained on light stock with some Indian Rivers reaching 6.96. Porto Rico fruits traded unevenly. cultivated and wild oranges steady near 2.25 to 4.38. Palermo and Messina lemons afloat totaled 91,528 boxes as of week end.
