The weekly market report shows a lifeless focal market with slow buying during Christmas week. Apples prices fell in New York while southern trade dwindled, and distributors face bulky supplies as curators and buyers hesitate.
New York reports apple exports for the week ending last Saturday at 65,688 barrels, up from 24,674 the prior year. Season totals reach 1,395,572 barrels versus 1,261,205 barrels last year, reflecting strong shipments as holiday buying wraps up before Christmas.
D T Jarratt Co of Jacksonville Texas were awarded a $2300 judgment against A Jacobs Co of Detroit after a shipment of five cars of Texan onions sold to Jacobs was rejected. The case hinged on market decline and condition of stock upon arrival. Both firms are prominent in fruit and produce trade.
Chicago on December 24 reports firm demand for fancy creamery butter despite limited supply. Local trade dominates with some out of town orders. Receipts light, quality improving in cold weather. Monday to Wednesday arrivals total 23,?? tubs. Prices varied with extras and firsts showing small gains. S. California vegetable shipments from southern California for the season from November 1 to December 22 total 780 cars. Daily reports show December 17 with 12 cars, December 18 with 11, December 19 and 20 with 31, December 21 with 10, and December 22 with 20 cars.
Chicago December 24 The Santa Fe Railway announces a special train for the Western Jobbers Association gathering with departure February 1915 and diverse round trip fares to major cities including Kansas City Chicago Houston Denver St Louis Sioux City Milwaukee and many stops en route. The train will visit Santa Fe Albuquerque Grand Canyon San Diego Los Angeles Redlands Riverside and more with stopovers and excursions. Reservations already underway and committee appointed in Chicago to organize the event.
Investigations intensify as New York police quiz suspects tied to the Joe and Ken Coke case at West Washington Market. Grand jury heard witnesses amid arrests linked to the murder of live poultry dealer Batt. Rittich implicated in dealings with Cohen brothers and a $250 payment for supposed lawyers fees.
Federal grand jury in St Louis returns 25 indictments in a two week probe of oleo margarine coloring. Special agent general Robert W. Childs led the investigation into large scale coloring in basements and back rooms, with cases to be tried in January.
New York December 24 railroads serving New York terminals posted a January 1 change giving receivers of butter eggs and poultry 48 hours to remove goods from docks. If not removed after the period a charge of 2 per 100 pounds with a minimum of 15 cents would apply from the expiration time until noon of the second day. Public warehouses would store the goods thereafter. The time limit was then extended to 72 hours. A New York Mercantile Exchange meeting passed resolutions opposing the ruling and sent them to the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Citrus shipments from Southern California for November 1 to December 22 reached 1,221 cars. Daily counts show 8 days in December with a mix of 14 to 23 cars, Tulare County totals to date at 875 cars, and Butte County season shipments at 410 cars with daily counts ranging from 10 to 19 cars.
Dallas December reports allege B C Dunlap & Co a Corsicana based produce dealer with shaky foundations backed by R E Rife. The firm owes T B Bomar for 65 sacks of onions and failed to settle or respond to letters. Bomar says Dunlap and Rife claimed established Corsicana operations but lacked a real office and concrete assets.
A California press dispatch reports the first refrigerated cargo of fresh produce sent via the Panama Canal from San Francisco to New York aboard the American-Hawaiian liner Ohio. The shipment includes thousands of northwest apples, about 1,000 crates of celery, and citrus and melons. Fifteen thousand boxes of apples are slated for re shipment to England. Target storage temperature is 35 degrees.
Nashville Tennessee December 24 Nashville now hosts a branch of the National League of Commission Merchants. The new group organized by Business Manager French of New York includes F G Lowe & Co J H Hertzka J J Hill the Tritchler Phillipe Company and G J Waters. Members plan to attend the Detroit convention as a body.
Chicago reports a light holiday week in the potato market with moderate receipts and steadyish prices. Frosted stock and limited demand limited trading while growers held firm on pricing, with bids mostly 20 to 22 cents and fresh sales around 30 to 40 cents for average stock.
The Kansas City Fruit Auction Company announces its new home at Second and Wyandotte streets, move driven by need for better access to buyers and improved handling of perishable goods. New facility features 20-car storage, bright heated premises, with salesroom expected on the second floor soon. first sale in the new building slated for Monday.
W M Meriman of Moreland Kentucky was fined 20 dollars plus costs after humane agents arrested him in Pittsburgh for shipping 79 crates of turkeys in crates only 11 inches high. Many birds died on arrival despite warnings to shippers.
