A carload shipment of coal arrived in Langlade county Wisconsin for relief clients as part of federal surplus relief efforts. The Antigo Daily Journal noted the odd barter mentioning Idaho potatoes to Langlade and Florida oranges to California as illustrative of the program.
Laredo Texas December 3 Losses are estimated between 250000 and 400000 as freezing weather November 20 wrecked tomato crops. Only 22 of 175 to 200 expected carloads were marketed. Temperatures fell to 27 on November 24 and 30 on the 28th. The tomato loss ranges 90 to 95 percent per A F Muller. Sweet peppers squash and beans suffered heavy damage with fields in lowlands hardest hit. Zapata county saw even harsher conditions.
Idaho Falls reports potato shippers in dealer meetings favor ending unsold rolling of Idaho potatoes. Dealers oppose indiscriminate rolling while the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation resumes purchases. Loaders bid each forenoon with acceptance by afternoon and two days to load cars.
Oakland Calif Dec 3 Thos J Ledwich referee in bankruptcy issued notice that Farm Products Sales Company Hayward Calif has applied for a discharge from debts Creditors may attend a meeting to show cause why discharge should not be granted The firm ceased operations July last year while assets were liquidated for creditors From January 1935 until last July the firm operated under section 77 B of the Bankruptcy Act
New York reports show about 20 000 lugs of Cuban tomatoes offered at two weekly sales with active bidding and satisfactory prices. Receipts are expected to rise next week to around 40 000 lugs, but buyers anticipate smooth clearance. Weather and grading conditions are watched, with six by seven and related sizes dominating the market as shipments from Cuban districts proceed.
Hazlehurst Mississippi sheriff thanks The Packer for aiding capture of Albert Karam alias William Maseeh and wife Gertrude Callahan. Maseeh pled guilty to one count and is sent to state penitentiary. Karam sentenced to 60 days jail. Sheriff notes pursuit spanned Mississippi and other states for fraud charges.

Federal report shows 6 percent U S No 1 and 72 percent over 85 percent U S No 1. outlook calls for about 100 carloads daily next week as shipments trend up.
Chicago dispatch notes the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association will hold its convention in New Orleans January 10 to 13. Special trains with modern equipment will transport attendees from across the country, including the President's Special from Kansas City via Missouri Pacific. It departs 8:30 a.m. Sunday January 9, reaches St Louis 1:30 p.m., leaves 2 p.m., and arrives in New Orleans 9 a.m. Monday.
Chicago reports eight year effort to back a national growers marketing system for grain ends as Farmers National Grain Corporation votes to dissolve. Stockholders to decide January. government losses cited up to 20 million dollars. Established 1929 with government financing. carried through Hoover and Roosevelt eras.
W M O Keefe executive secretary of the Association of Refrigerated Warehouses will meet G F Nieman in Pittsburgh during the week of December 12 to discuss the program for the association annual meeting. The convention will be held February 2 to 5, 1938 at the William Penn hotel. O Keefe expects a large attendance after his western and southern tour.
A joint application filed this week by 52 railroads operating in California requests a 7 to 10 percent rise in intra state rates and seeks increases in all basic commodities carload freight and carload traffic rates.
New York secretary revoked the license of a firm led by Licen T Richman after finding flagrant violations of the P A C Act. The commission concluded the firm submitted incomplete and fraudulent returns, triggering the punishment and signaling tighter regulatory enforcement.
San Diego Fruit and Produce Company wins a 52000 judgment against Richman & Samuels, Inc., New York commission merchants, in Superior Court here after a ten year dispute over allegedly false accounts of carload pea shipments and misappropriated funds. The action seeks further sums. a separate federal revocation of Richman & Samuels’ Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act license is noted for multiple years with admitted falsifications and withheld consignor payments.
At Weslaco Texas a joint meeting of the Growers Industry Committee and the Shippers Marketing Committee recommended to Secretary Wallace that this week regulations on grapefruit shipments be extended for another week. The change would broaden the allowance for smaller sizes to permit shipping 5 percent size 112 seedless fruit amid demand for reduced size restrictions.
Los Angeles Dec 3 Preparations for an extensive consumer advertising campaign for Iceberg lettuce from Arizona were near completion this week. Joss Si Gast advertising manager of the Western Growers Protective Association said the sponsor of the current campaign and others featured in the program.
Chicago businessman F W Morf Jr writes to George Tafbury demanding clarification on a planned Pittsburgh event. He questions whether the gathering will be a produce convention or an educational tour and mocks Pittsburgh’s culture and smoke.
