A carload shipment of coal arrived in Langlade county Wisconsin for relief clients as part of federal surplus relief efforts. The Antigo Daily Journal noted the odd barter mentioning Idaho potatoes to Langlade and Florida oranges to California as illustrative of the program.

Cold wave devastates crops in Laredo district

Laredo Texas December 3 Losses are estimated between 250000 and 400000 as freezing weather November 20 wrecked tomato crops. Only 22 of 175 to 200 expected carloads were marketed. Temperatures fell to 27 on November 24 and 30 on the 28th. The tomato loss ranges 90 to 95 percent per A F Muller. Sweet peppers squash and beans suffered heavy damage with fields in lowlands hardest hit. Zapata county saw even harsher conditions.

Salt River lettuce shipments rise with tight supplies

Salt River valley lettuce season in Phoenix area progresses with lighter than expected loadings this week and a projected 500 to 750 car shortfall from fall planting. About 3,500 acres planted, field losses 30 to 60 percent from germination, but current cut size is good quality. Federal report shows 6 percent U S No 1 and 72 percent over 85 percent U S No 1. outlook calls for about 100 carloads daily next week as shipments trend up.

Special Trains Planned for United New Orleans Meet
