Herb Emerson Wins At Last In New Market Dept

New York April 16 A report shows Herb Emerson has taken a job under Commissioner Dillon in the New York State Department of Markets created to curb living costs. Dillon promises a costly terminal with claims of saving consumers 20 to 30 percent on perishable foods, about 50 to 60 million annually. Apple Exports Rise Strongly In Week Ended Saturday

New York reports apple exports for the week ending last Saturday at 36,295 barrels, up from 4,066 barrels a year ago. Season total reaching 2,684,396 barrels versus 1,778,452 barrels in the same period last year.

California vegetable shipments to April 14 totaled 2,967 cars from the southern district. Daily receipts included 21 cars on April 8, 14 on April 9, 20 on April 10 and 11, 12 on April 12, 22 on April 13, and 7 on April 14.

Dangers of Over Generosity Seattle Firm's Custody Case

Seattle April 16 A produce broker Benton F Pierce manager of the Produce Distributors was arrested by weights and measures inspector J P Worden on a charge arising from selling strawberries in boxes advertised as a pint measure but containing more. Police Judge Gordon took the case under advisement. Pierce represented local distributor for a Texas firm. Boxes measure 37 cubic inches with three and three tenths inches excess.

Prices Firm Up in Potatoes Across Michigan and Minnesota

Chicago April 16 There was activity in the potato market this week with prices firming at loading stations. Minnesota and Michigan saw the strongest gains while Wisconsin was cautious. Outside demand remained active though buyers stayed wary amid rising selling prices. Farmers were paid mainly 35 to 48 cents fob loading points with some loads reaching 48 cents in Minnesota and 45 cents in Michigan. A few Wisconsin spots paid 4 cents under prevailing levels.

Sells Goods and Skips Potato Shipper Near Beggs Company

Springfield April 16. A man named O S Stutsman, described as 30, smooth talking and well dressed, who traded potatoes and sugar, was arrested here after attempting to pay a $691.24 debt with a bad check. He had previously been linked to highway robbery in Beardstown in 1904 and blackmail in St Louis in 1913. He vanished after soliciting four car shipments for Beggs & Co of Minneapolis, leaving Wilkerson to chase payment and leading to Stutsman’s arrest by grocer R M Dockum for an advance payment on potatoes not delivered. Beggs seeks the $691.24, while Stutsman’s assets were turned over to Illinois Produce and Provision Co. in an effort to settle. Stutsman’s family reportedly scraped funds to settle with Dockum to secure his release.

Chicago Trade Mulls Wholesale Freight Yard Plan

A Chicago committee weighing relocation of the produce business from South Water Street to a 45 acre site on Dwentysetond and Halstead Streets proposes a central wholesale yard on the southwest side with capacity for 700 cars.
