Government officials stress the importance of a strong harvest to ensure adequate food supply for the nation. They warn that the country's needs cannot be overemphasized and call for widespread efforts to achieve record crop production.
Secretary of Agriculture David Houston urges American farmers to boost production of staple crops including wheat corn and beans and to expand potatoes vegetables peanuts and poultry to meet urgent domestic and international needs amid wartime and possible extended disruption of European markets. He stresses conserving hay forage and pasture and using efficient seed and storage methods to ensure steady food supplies for both the United States and allied nations.
A call to farmers to expand tillable land use and labor deployment to increase food production. Emphasis on reducing waste from infertile eggs and surplus markets, with a focus on efficient units and wise planning to achieve national agricultural sufficiency.
In New York on April 13, egg receipts for March 1 to last Saturday totaled 594 416 cases versus 722 782 a year earlier. Week ending last Saturday saw 189 085 cases, up from 158 467. Prices held steady with storage packed firsts around 8 to 34 cents and specials higher. By Friday, all eggs remained strong, with bullish Western demand supporting further advances and steady prices.

April 18 reports show heavier Louisiana strawberry arrivals in Chicago with lower basis prices. Trade viewed as fair with 24 pint cases at 2.50 to 2.75 dollars and 24 quart cases moving slowly at 5.25 to 5.50 dollars. quality described as desirable and stock not often poor.
Laredo Texas April 12 shipments of onions total about 450 cars to today, compared with 1 425 cars last year. Movement is increasing with about 90 to 100 cars moving daily. Market has been strong at roughly 1 75 to 2 75 dollars but is easing.
Fort Smith Arkansas reports the strawberry crop will be far below last year due to severe drought and heat. The state should ship about 1000 cars this year, with Van Buren Springdale and northwest Arkansas most damaged. Last year shipments reached 1400 to 1500 cars. many berries were not picked.
A proposal to extend car demurrage terms beyond April 30 suggests replacing the old $1 per day rate with a staged plan. The National Industrial Traffic League backs returning to $1 daily and the Kansas City Board of Trade and Chamber of Commerce groups urge reverting after free time ends. The compromise would set charges at 32 cents for five days and $3 thereafter.
New York April 13. Judge Learned Hand ruled for the government in the packing stock butter case involving the New York Butter Packing Company and Anderson Produce Company Knoxville Tenn. Butter seized en route from one state to another for containing dirt, a test of agricultural authority.
New York April 13 The Associated Warehousemen report shows holdings in major cold storage houses as of April 1 1917 Eggs in storage 49 100 cases versus 93 800 cases a year earlier Butter 5 040 000 pounds up from 2 296 000 pounds the increase 2 744 000 pounds reflects the change in storage across 56 warehouses.
Salt Lake City April 13 The late spring according to J C Baward Taylor secretary of the State Horticultural Commission goes toward eliminating frost danger to the fruit crop. Outlook says prospects for a heavy fruit crop in Idaho this year.
Crop reports from Arkansas Oklahoma and Texas show large acreage planned for potatoes peaches cantaloupes strawberries and watermelons with detailed grower and shipper data to be published in The Packer Weekly Bulletin. Reports from Virginia Mississippi Tennessee show varying acreages in crops including cabbage early apples peaches potatoes and melons. Shippers lists are printed in The Packer Weekly Bulletin with detailed figures and addresses for advertisers.
Shippers and receivers from Boston Philadelphia Chicago and other states met in the Mercantile Exchange executive chamber to press the Trunk Lines Association to reverse its 5 percent breakage allowance. Attorney Winslow of the National Poultry Butter and Eye Association attended as members outlined a plan to pursue victory and begin action once details are settled.
Hastings Pennsylvania April 13 The potato conditions at present surpass anything in Hastings potato growing history. Acreage will rise about ten percent and estimated yield about twenty percent, totaling over two thousand cars, up from 1350 last year and 1760 the year before. Movement begins April 16 and runs to June 1. Heavy first week in May. Stock is packed in standard barrels and loaded 165 to 186 barrels per car, mostly 186, using ventilators. Many buyers and commission merchants are arriving to prepare for business. No contracts or sales have yet been made.
In Chicago the egg market held firm with steady to higher prices all week. Northern stock fetched top prices while southern stock lagged by about 1 cent, and storage packed eggs traded around 33 to 34 cents with varying lots. Receipts ranged weekly with several contracts risking heavy seller losses on April deliveries.

Pennsylvania railroad plans to loan idle land along hundreds of miles of track to employees to grow vegetables and offset high living costs. Applications have been filed by many Eastern division workers in Delaware New Jersey Maryland and Pennsylvania as gardens would run from Chicago to the Atlantic seaboard. New members of the National League are announced for Philadelphia and Indianapolis branches.
Harold J Brown loses father after appendicitis operation and Armour & Co reportedly considers acquiring Harold L Brown Company with all its East and West connections. Harry Bemis cannot verify the talks and says no deal is yet confirmed, awaiting word from Chicago.
Chicago April 13. Amid shifts in work hours dealers cut opening to 5 am 4 pm for six months and 7 am 4 pm otherwise. A new wage scale of 18 weekly plus overtime pay sparked unrest as a Hustlers’ Union claims nonrecognition threatens a strike before next week’s end.
The International Apple Shippers Association executive committee set August 15 to 17 for the next convention at the Hotel Astor New York. An executive committee meeting soon will review the program and convention details. The rules committee considers single plate exhibit classes to broaden entries and prizes may be revised.
