Tennessee Kentucky and Alabama strawberry crop figures show 1 000 acres in Castleberry Alabama section with Atmore territory expected to ship 100 cars and Cullman similar to last year York section reports 100 cars
Nashville April reports estimate Tennessee will ship 2 150 to 2 525 railroad cars of berries as West Tennessee leads production with 1 600 to 1 800 cars and East Tennessee 550 to 600. The season opens about May 5 with carlot shippers preparing and railroads ready to move fruit coast to coast, including Alaska and Seattle bound shipments.
New York April 4 crop reports from Georgia Virginia and North and South Carolina list extensive acreage in potatoes watermelons sweet potatoes cantaloupes berries tomatoes beans cucumbers onion sets peas dew berries and other crops. Shippers and growers provide figures for peaches watermelons pears potatoes pecans and Georgia cane syrup with shipments expected from August through November.
Chicago April 6 Market on citrus fruits shows a healthier tone with improved quality and firmer demand. California Navels steady at 3.25 per box, fancy stock. Florida grapefruit demand rising as quality improves. Fancy grapefruit auction at 3.50 to 4. car lots 3.85. California lemons steady at 3.50 to 3.75 carlot. Receipts lighter, overall market brighter.
The Interstate Commerce Commission announced a net rise in 447 freight rates for fruits and vegetables while 32 were cut and 37 unchanged. The action affects carload and LTL rates from the South to major hubs, with some state exemptions and several protests by farm and merchant groups nationwide.
Kansas City April 6 bulletins from the local Office of Markets show the carlot movement of new crops for the season beginning March 34. Asparagus totals 20 with South Carolina and California. Cabbage 70 with Florida Texas California. Onions 26 Texas. Strawberries 94 with Louisiana Florida Texas. Tomatoes 9 with California Florida.
Philadelphia April 6. President RB Clayberger head of the National League of Commission Merchants sent a special letter to President Wilson pledging the League's support. He said members will cooperate with the Secretary of Agriculture and Department of Markets to conserve and distribute perishable foods and place the organization at the government's disposal.
New York April 6 Herbert Ward English egg importer returned to New York last week. Ward bought stock last year but says prices are too high now to buy eggs for England. England gets eggs from Egyptian sections at 27 4 cents per dozen and large stock from Ireland. Eggs retail in England at 48 cents per dozen and cost 35 36 cents at primary shipping points in England and Ireland.
Arkansas producers report large acreages and planned shipments across vegetables and fruits including potatoes sweet potatoes beans strawberries peaches cantaloupes watermelons apples tomatoes cucumbers radishes cabbage peas blackberries grapes cherries in Alma and Altus areas. Shipments scheduled from June through July with express runs for early apples and other fruits.
John D. Key and W F Maxwell, recently released after serving time in Leavenworth for defrauding poultry and produce shippers, paid $50 each to secure release in Memphis by meeting creditor demands. Shortly after, Key was arrested on an indictment in Denver by a U S marshal.
The Chicago Louisiana strawberry market stayed firm with light receipts not meeting demand for good stock. Early-week prices reached 38.50 per 24 pint crate as quality remained attractive though some fruit was soft or sandy and discounted. Florida freezers arrived at 2.214 per quart, largely in fair condition with many fruitSoft.
Chicago April 6 The Santa Fe produce terminal proposal was brought before the city council and indefinitely postponed. The ordinance authorizing the terminal establishment was referred to the Terminals Commission after prior reviews by local industries and compensation committees. Auction Offerings Light as California Navels and Florida grapefruit circulate at modest prices.
Irving National Bank directors meet in New York in April to pledge continued salary to employees who enlist in the army or navy so their total compensation matches what they earned at the time of enlistment. The policy applies for the term of service to support patriotic duty.
The Senate and House declare war on the Imperial German government. Congress authorizes the president to employ all naval and military forces and resources to carry on war and bring the conflict to a successful termination. The United States pledges all resources to the war effort.
Washington reports a plan to mobilize commercial interests for civilian food distribution under a Commercial Economy Board. Secretary Clarkson says the body will anticipate wartime distribution issues and push voluntary federal regulation, with legislative action if needed to ensure adequate food, fuel, and clothing supplies.
Chicago April 6 onion market showed firmer tone with a good call from both local and outside points. Yellows sold mostly at 8.50 to 8.75 per 100 pounds, Reds nearly cleared with remaining lots moving similarly to yellows. Australian stock arrived late week priced at 9 to 10 cents per pound for good quality. Texas stock redirected east for better prices, delaying new Texas arrivals until late week. Overall quality cited as very good for early shipments and met fair demand.
California vegetable shipments from the southern district for the season Nov 1 to Apr 4 totaled 4 912 cars. Recent daily totals: Mar 29 24 cars, Mar 30 49, Mar 31 48, Apr 1 42, Apr 2 23, Apr 4 40 cars.
Washington reports 1917 Bermuda onion crop for Texas estimated at 12 050 acres, up 2 000 from 1916. April 1 condition 68.5 percent of normal, yield about 246 bushels per acre totaling 2 964 300 bushels or 6 488 cars of 464 bushels. Webb county projected 2 520 cars. County readings competitive across Atascosa Dimmitt Frio lower Rio Grande LaSalle Maverick Nueces Webb Zavala and others near 70 percent.
In Chicago during April the egg trade remained active with higher midweek prices. Receipts rose daily from 25,026 to 34,702 cases, as firsts in shipping cases traded around 30 to 32 cents and storage packed extras reached 31 to 33 cents with varying delivery dates.
Robert T. Cochran returns from Florida and estimates Georgia peach production between 2500 and 3000 cars. He notes most crop is south of Macon and forecasts potential loss from a February freeze reducing peaches north of Atlanta. He mentions the May drop as an uncertain factor.
Pred Stocklish was sentenced to four years in the House of Correction and Earnest Froelich to three years on a charge of jointly obtaining about $15,000 from the Hassmann Mueller Produce Company for eggs not received. Stockfish was the company shipping clerk overseeing egg receipts and Froelich posed as the son of a supposed egg seller to collect for eggs the firm believed had been delivered.
Chicago April 6 The hearing on the proposed increase in minimum weight on carrots of onions from 24000 to 30000 pounds before the Central Freight Association was postponed indefinitely due to roads preparing for a general freight rate rise of 10 percent sought from the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Chicago April 6 The cabbage market stayed steady this week with Texas stock selling mainly at 160 dollars a ton in carlots. Florida offerings were up somewhat and generally satisfactory. Full 90 pound crates traded mainly at 750 dollars.
Market reports show little movement in New York eggs over the week ending with receipts rising to over 31 000 on Wednesday and Tuesday totals above 22 000. Current packed eggs held near 33 to 34 cents with fresh gathered stock selling up to 34 34 1 2 cents and western firsts noted at 32 to 34 cents.
A New York Mercantile Exchange meeting led by E. J. Wilmerding established the Home Defense League for the West Side trade. Dry goods, fruit, and vegetable firms organized units with classes A or B, drills weekly, and police oversight. Captain Leahy urged broad employee enrollment to safeguard business during wartime concerns.
