The sixteenth annual Melon Distributors Association convention at West Baden Springs Ind drew strong turnout despite market downturns. President C C Winkler and officers were elected for 1930. discussions focused on standardization, freight rates, and weather delays impacting the Florida crop.
Rochester N Y April 11 Western New York potato prices steadied after a rapid rise last week and this week. Peak season prices 4 10 to 4 25 per sack early week, eased to 4 10 4 20 for U S No 1 round whites delivered Beles less transport. Onion shipments jumped to 108 cars, potato and carrot shipments largely unchanged, holdings thinning as season ends.
For the week ending April 5 exports of apples from the United States and Canada totaled 14 421 barrels and 8 691 boxes. Exports to date total 2 815 737 barrels and 5 674 313 boxes, compared with 3 644 315 barrels and 11 389 612 boxes to the same date last year.
Hazlehurst Illinois April 11 Copiah county vegetable crops show rapid growth after a warm rain. Cabbage begins heading peas bloom prolifically beans replanted and nearing emergence tomatoes planted in fields peas harvest around April 20 with cabbage shortly after. First blooms killed will shorten the pea crop and beans will be late with normal acreage.
Heavy rains across most of Florida late last week and early this week worsened conditions for truck crops. Central counties saw two inches plus, with low lands greatly flooded. replanting and rapid soil recovery efforts continued. citrus remained in excellent condition, while peppers and eggplant faced high damage. Shipments projected to peak around May 1 with a season ending May 1.
Eagle Lake Texas April 11 The potato crop in this area looks fine after a recent good rain though more moisture is needed. Planting movement will start May 12 to 16, or 16 to 20. Acreage is about average. The crop escaped the front that visited the valley on March 21.

Fresno April 11 Open fight erupts between Sun-Maid Raisin Growers of California directors led by J M Leslie and Carlyle Thorpe managing director over Sun-Maid manufacturing and selling methods. Board demands Thorpe explain abolition of Sunland Sales Co op and discharge of Naman Brothers. Thorpe counters Sun-Maid was in loss when he took charge and credits changes with saving $2,000,000 annually.
A New York Times dispatch from April 11 reports Portugal Africa facing a coffee slump with millions of trees unprofitable and warehouses full. It notes calls for high tariffs on Brazilian coffee and discusses Brazil's decades long price stabilizing controls that boosted output and caused global surplus.
Washington April 11 The House Agriculture Committee reported favorably on a Senate approved bill regulating marketing of fresh fruits and vegetables live and dressed poultry and eggs.
On Thursday night 2,081 bags of Egyptian onions remained unsold on the New York dock. Cable advices indicate 22,500 bags were afloat, consigned to New York, Canada, Cuba and Porto Rico.
Narens Bros. & Co of Chicago filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition listing liabilities of 19,690.68 with assets of 7,678.13. The firm had ceased business at 110 South Water Market about six months ago.
Washington D C April 11 The Department of Agriculture released the April 1 conditions for early peaches and potatoes across ten states. Peaches show varied scores from 16 to 71 with an average of 62.0. potatoes range 70 to 80 averaging 75.3. Virginia reports 35 percent.
A Mississippi report notes the March cold wave caused little vegetable damage. Tomatoes and beans suffered some losses but most plants remained, with acreage expected to rise from 14,800 to 16,800 acres. Shipping data from 3,176 cars on the Illinois Central line reflected regional movements.
The Chicago & Northwestern Railway will open a large potato terminal in Chicago next Tuesday. Yards will operate next week with completion rushed, and the administration building should finish in about 30 days. The terminal will have 600 car team track capacity and an auxiliary yard for 1 350 cars with 60 foot concrete driveways and through routes from Western avenue and Lincoln street. A joint agency will handle carlot sales and diversions. The project sits on about 60 acres between Lincoln street and Western avenue, two miles west of South Water Market. The Northwestern plans to abandon Grand avenue facilities upon completion and will open the new yard to all railroads with tariffs effective April 15.
Special trainroad shipments of Bermuda onions begin moving from Laredo with the first cars April 3 and a heavy start this week. Market prices hover around 1.75 to 2.00 per crate with large plantations harvesting extensively. Pro rating is planned after 1,000 carloads move out, and the U S Department of Agriculture opens a Market News Service office in the Laredo Chamber of Commerce.
Hastings Fla April 11 favorable weather has improved the potato situation with early digging nearly done at Federal Point and Bunnell and most harvests now from Hastings area. Blight appears in some fields but is checked by growers. demand remains strong for No 1 Spaulding Rose at eight dollars per barrel.

Unusually warm weather boosts Imperial Valley cantaloupe growth as first shipments are planned for around April 20. County agricultural commissioner B A Harrigan notes melon acreage exceeds 62 000 and standardization law will be strictly enforced amid Acreage breakdowns for cantaloupes Honey Dews and Honey Balls totaling 52 687 acres this year up from 36 362 last year.
Phoenix April 11 The Arizona spring lettuce deal is ending early as hot weather accelerates maturity and reduces shipments. Weekly deliveries rose to 1,517 cars from 1,405 the prior week, with about 1,000 cars left to ship depending on weather. Prices held around 1.40 dollars a crate as demand remained moderate and foresight of further engine shipments loomed.
The onion market in New York showed notable strength this week with cooler weather aiding trade. Prices remained steady as demand favored fancy stock. mid western yellows sold at 2.25 to 3 dollars per 100 pounds, New York state yellows at 2.25 to 2.75, Massachusetts yellows 1.40 to 2.35, and Spanish onions in half-cases brought 1.50 to 2.26 per 100 pounds.
Hammond April 11 delayed Louisiana berry movement shows 261 cars moved by Wednesday versus 878 last year. Prices higher on average this year with 261 cars netting 785 315 55 dollars. Expect lull around mid April after a freeze, then a renewed push toward late April with potential hundred car days.
