Tut Tremont house in Chicago sold to John A Rice formerly of San Francisco. The extensive itemized dispatches recount various political maneuvers, rail incidents, and federal actions across Washington and states, including remarks on candidates for 1880 and congressional proceedings.
Fire swept the Licking county courthouse in Newark destroying the cupola and burning down to the second story after a gas jet illumination failed at noon. The $200,000 building had only $20,000 insurance, leaving concerns over total loss.
In St Louis on April 1 Republicans secured one council seat and Democrats five. The new council composition stands five Republicans and four Democrats.
The Sun notes Horatio Seymour, despite refusals, as the leading gubernatorial figure for New York. The Rochester Union backs Seymour as the unifying Democratic leader, while some suggest opponents favor Sanford E. Church.
Gen. C W Legendre, former US consul Amoy district China, says most Chinese immigrants to the United States come under contracts made with emigration brokers. He argues to curb immigration, Hong Kong houses must be countered and British authorities could help, and a Burlingame treaty revision may not be needed. He condemns brokers as nearly kidnappers and calls for action.
A band of Poncas in Omaha meet General Crook Standing Bear and Buffalo Chips to protest relocation to Indian Territory. They request money to bury those who die en route while Crook says help must come from Washington and only rations can be provided. Five Poncas are ill in Omaha.
Arkansas dispatch reports twenty armed men entered Fayettville on Sunday, firing volleys into the Sentinel office and homes of prominent citizens. No injuries occurred, but the raiders face severe penalties if captured. the raid is linked to the death of the outlaw Reed at the jail.
Chicago returns show Harrison 22356, Wright 19063, Schmidt about 8500 with the city ticket likely ahead by 8500 to 4500. Aldermen results unavailable yet but socialists win their picks. About twenty precincts remain to report.
The Belmont oil works owned by W. L. Atkins & Co. burned today in Philadelphia. Frank Callaghan was fatally burned and John Greaves seriously injured. Separate item notes a Pittsburgh riot losses bill debated in Harrisburg with the motion to postpone defeated 74 to 81.
A river messenger reports a fire at the Indiana prison south of Louisville near Jeffersonville. Telegraph information is not yet available. The penitentiary holds over 600 inmates.
Milwaukee reports show Cole leading re election as supreme court judge by over 5000 votes. Interior towns reveal strong GOP gains, predicting a larger statewide Republican majority. Milwaukee also indicates Republican control of the city council for the first time.
Foreign offices report Austria England Russia Turkey and Italy consent to a mixed occupation with each nation appointing a commander to prevent Turkish Bulgarian clashes. Italy reserves a point, no single commander, aim is to avert conflict in Eastern Roumelia rather than a unified command.
