Navy vessels raced to aid the submerged submarine S-5, 55 miles east of Cape Henlopen, with air pumped to the crew of 26 men and four officers after a 35 hour submersion. A telephonic buoy relayed the SOS as General Goethals kept by to relay messages and coordinate rescue.
Officers and 26 crew members of the submerged submarine are reported revived by fresh air pumped through a small hull hole. The General Goethals sent a wireless message stating the men were revived before destroyers arrived.
Officials report the Utah States submarine S-5, with four officers and 26 men aboard, trapped for nearly 85 hours, was located near Goethals and signals were sent for rescue as rescuers rushed to the scene.
