In Rock Springs Wyoming on October 20 two drunken African American men attempted to rob Mills tea store. Marshal Stoddard shot and killed them after they rushed him, later deputies detained railroad workers to prevent a Pace war as the town calmed.
United States Senator Clarence D. Clark, aided by Frank G. Curtis of New York, campaigned in Cheyenne at the Atlas theatre. He accused the Democratic Party of breaking pledges from the Baltimore platform, raising living costs, creating 20,000 offices, and opposing Wilsonian policy, while praising the war effort and warning of Europe’s cheap labor after peace. Curtis defended Clark and Mondell, lauding reforms and attacking Hughes, while Clark cited the platform and Underwood tariff as broken pledges and urged higher tariffs to shield postwar industry.
Fort Yellowstone in Yellowstone park was abandoned and a military post moved to the border. Two hundred soldiers will be redeployed to the border and be replaced by thirty rangers. Anne Frances A Keller chair of the Hughes alliance women’s committee declines a debate challenge from the Democratic National Committee women’s bureau. She cites scheduling conflicts after telegraphing from Los Angeles where the Hughes campaign spurred a Wilson rally. Democratic officials say the Hughes committee declined without Keller’s personal decision.
D. Bassett, manager at Novelty Art Works in Salt Lake City, was crushed to death three miles south of Ogden while crossing railroad tracks in an automobile when two trains on opposite directions closed in. Four companions jumped clear and escaped injury.
Winnipeg report says Canadian Pacific trainmen from coast to coast were ordered to strike at 6 p m Wednesday. Great Mull, a trainmen representative, remained hopeful for an amicable settlement despite the sudden escalation and earlier optimism.
