Albany Oct 9 Fifty thousand words of argument pro and con were delivered as the impeachment trial of Governor Sulzer neared a verdict. Louis Marshall for the defense and Alan B Parker for the managers denounced the charges and the evidence as untrustworthy.
A tornado near Lodi and sweeping through Broken Bow Nebraska caused structural damage and injuries across several farms and towns. Reports say multiple homes were destroyed near Lodi and Sargent with telegraph and phone lines down. casualties uncertain but no confirmed deaths.
Washington reports say administration forces defend the currency reform bill against bankers criticism at the Boston convention. President Wilson and Senate supporters warn against organized opposition and press for timely action, while critics allege pro banker influence and misrepresentation. Rutledge said the survey will start soon and the line will not connect other railroad companies and stock will be sold mainly to farmers and businessmen of the territory.
Reported plan to detonate dynamite at Gamboa dyke to open water route between oceans. Also mentions earth slides at Cucara cha and Gold Mill and Goethals telegrams with canal opening optimism and dredge work to follow.
Harts W Hodapp alias Arthur Charles Roge[ regarder ] was arrested in City Hall Park after years eluding detectives from St Louis to New York. He faces extradition on charges of embezzlement and fund diversion totaling about 10700. Detectives say a woman he wronged betrayed him leading to his capture and a $210 reward.
A Wyoming mother who worked in a Rawlins coal mine to support her two sons, both jailed for assault, secured a parole for one, Vasbinder, after persistently appealing to the pardons board as she toiled to fund his defense and waits for his release. The board noted her devotion and the son’s lack of a criminal nature.
Citizens of Phoenix allege improper conduct by a Los Angeles deputy sheriff and a woman traveling with him on an Interstate train. They sought legal action under the Mann White Slave Act after they reported the incident to the U.S. marshal. The deputy was arrested and held on $10,000 bond.
Ladie Hush, misread as Bush, stars for the Philadelphia Athletics in an 8 to 2 victory over the New York Giants in game three. Bush’s speed and control limit the Giants to five hits while teammates Murphey Oldring Collins and Baker drive key rallies.
Washington October 9 Representative Underwood chairman of the ways and means committee returns to Washington with plans to study repeal of the 8 percent discount provision on imports in American ships. Joseph W Polk of the state department discussed repeal with him. President Wilson’s position remains open though he favors the existing law.
The Cheyenne schools announce an honor roll contest with tickets to Atlas Theater prizes for top students. The draw runs through October 17 with first prize nine dollars and second prize two dollars. The Atlas program includes "Run of Waterloo" six reel feature on Saturdays.
