Four Die in Vanderbilt Cup Auto Race on Long Island

At Long Island Motor Parkway on October 1, four people died and nineteen were seriously injured in the Sixth Vanderbilt Cup race won by Harry F. Grant in a 120 horsepower Alco. Grant set a new American road race record with 278.08 miles in 4 hours 12 minutes 58 seconds. The scene was grim as crashes during the event led to two more deaths, including Louis Chevrolet’s mechanician Charles Miller, and left spectators in a pall of sorrow.

Iowa Boy Defends Bank Against Armed Bandit

Walter Julina a 16 year old in McClelland Iowa used a six shooter to shoot at robber Tom Kirby of Oaktown after Kirby pressed a pistol to the boy's head in a bank. Kirby was chased by a crowd of nearly 5000 and captured. he says he can earn only 1.50 daily and has a wife and six children.

Woman in Night Dress Fires at Burglar in Chase

Mrs C R de Silva, wife of a Union depot worker, chased a burglar from her home near Twenty fourth Street and Tentonw pigee in the early hours. She fired her pistol at the intruder as he fled with her dog, aiming to stop him without harming the animal.

Man Rescued After 46 Days of Starvation in North Woods

George Ford of Duluth was saved by Hudson Bay Company tug crews after 46 days alone on a deserted island in Lac Suci Nipigon country north of Rainy River. He survived on berries and occasional birds or fish after his partner deserted, taking supplies and canoes.
