Turkish torpedo gunboat Pejonk-I-Derla was sunk last night by an enemy submarine, with 109 of 111 crew lost. Authorities presume the loss occurred in the Dardanelles amid Anglo-French fleet actions. The vessel, built in Kiel in 1890, mounted two four inch guns and three torpedo tubes.
An official Villa bulletin claims Obregon’s army was decisively defeated below Leon on Saturday after Villa troops captured Silao, the Carranza base. Obregon reports Villa attacked at Trinidad, drove Villa back to Leon, and inflicted heavy casualties.
Henry Lang a florist helper in Catskill shot and killed Ruth Hammer 13 and Ida Beach near the town reservoir then killed himself. The sisters had walked out of town after Lang followed them and reportedly fired two shots as they fled.
The bodies of nine Lusitania victims, among the dead from the torpedoed liner, arrived in New York aboard the ice steamer New York sailing from Liverpool May 15. The dead include Charles Frohman of New York, Mr and Mrs Charles A Plamondon of Chicago, and others from Boston Bridgeport Trenton St Thomas Ontario and an unnamed Miss McBright.
West Orange New Jersey May 24 Thomas Edison at 68 has perfected the telescribe a device that records telephone conversations on wax records at both ends of the line. Edison claims its chief use will be in commercial leases and business calls saving millions of dollars yearly by preventing confusions in telephone discussions.
War breaks out quickly after declarations as Austrian aeroplanes destroy ships and bombard Italian towns including Venice. Italian and Austrian units fire along Tyrol and eastern frontier. German forces move toward Verona. Besieged by Germany, Austria and Italy face mass mobilization with heavy losses reported on multiple fronts.
London report notes Austro German forces checked after sweeping Galicia. Germany may shorten its western line and withdraw troops from the Planders front as Italy enters the war. Official Petrograd bulletin mentions Shavl region activity and renewed Narew attacks with pickets on the left bank of the Rawka.

An official invitation from Oakland park department invites all aquatic birds on the Pacific coast to make their headquarters in Oakland. City sponsor Lee Kerfoot predicts a nearly unanimous response and a strong local backing for the plan.
