The United States cabled Ambassador Gerard to present America's note to Germany condemning the Lusitania sinking and violations of American rights on the high seas. Washington demands disavowal, reparations, and steps to prevent recurrence, insisting on strict accountability.
Ten automobiles carrying 36 Lincoln Highway boosters left the Plains hotel at 7 28 am on the Cheyenne Big Springs booster trip under the Cheyenne Motor Club. The party, traveling via Sidney and Big Springs, reached Nebraska in five hours, with stops along the Lincoln Highway. An organized effort to promote continental travel and good roads brought a Nebraska Wyoming association into being at Sidney. The Sidney commercial club gave a royal welcome with a band, and the group departed for Cheyenne after a warm reception.
Delegates at the world court congress burst into applause as Dr John Weeley Hill of New York denounced hyphenated American identities and urged unity under the American flag. The audience rose for the national anthem while war comments were barred during sessions.
In Johannesburg on May 13 a wave of anti German demonstrations culminated in the destruction of over 60 buildings. Police were unable to stop the rioters who wrecked ten warehouses ten saloons three hotels and more than twenty shops including the German Kranz club and parts of the mining corporation fires. The mining firm has an international board with German participation.
Vienna born vice consul for Austria Hungary B Van Vleieh has been arrested in Vancouver and sent to the Navarro internment camp. He will be detained until the war ends.
Italy nears declaration of war after rejecting Austria's final peace proposal. Baron Sonnino says a major announcement may come within 48 hours. Austria offered Trentino cession, Trieste home rule, Isonzo area transfer, and Albania terms.
London reports Chile demands Germany retract its note and apologize for the Dresden incident as Berlin calls the expressions weak and an unwarranted interference with sovereign rights. Chile has five days to secure the withdrawal and formal apology.
Washington dispatch reports the German government notified major US newspapers by letter and telegraph to stop publishing warnings to Americans about traveling on belligerent ships. The warning circulated in multiple large cities last night.
London reports Russian cossacks on the Bukowina frontier pierced barbed wire, dislodged Austrian infantry from trenches, and captured 2,000 prisoners, a battery of artillery, and many caissons. Western Galicia sees ongoing Austro German offensives with Vienna claiming Russian retreat, while Russia says operations continue.
Seventy five passengers departed Euston for Liverpool and boarded the White Star liner Adriatic bound for New York. Two thirds had bookings before the Lusitania torpedoing and others since last Saturday. One third were women. At Liverpool a further hundred passengers joined in the second class.
The Tuesday issue wrongly stated that City Engineer R. D. Goodrich’s $70 000 estimate for the proposed improvement did not include curbing and guttering. The correction confirms the estimate does include curb and gutter work on the streets in question.

The Cheyenne Ranch No 2 of the National Order of Cowboy Rangers will be instituted in Cheyenne on Friday night May 21 with a Denver drill team. A Rawlins ranch may form May 22 and Kawl ina Ranch No 14 initiation may follow. The order aims to preserve frontier deeds as it grows from Wyoming to the east. Denver businessmen will join the Cheyenne event and a special train from the national ranch is planned for Frontier Day festivities with families.
