Cheyenne Apartments directors meet to elect officers and name a site at Nineteenth and Evans across from the old Schnitzer home. The three story, full basement building will cost 225000 and house forty six families with bids to follow.
Salem Oregon May 3 Acting on advices from Attorney General Brown and deputy secretary of state Sam Kozer telegraphed Oregon county clerks to remove Senator Miles Poindexter from the ballot as a Republican aspirant for the presidential nomination. An affidavit of withdrawal signed by Poindexter cites pending legislation in Congress and his need to return to the capital, making a campaign in Oregon impossible.
The U S circuit court upheld the conviction of Joshua Sykes A M Dean John Ferguson and Joseph Crosby members of the Church of the Living God for conspiracy to hinder the selective draft act by urging non registration and declaring the German army the chosen people of the Lord.
Leo Perez and Miss Rosa Rimera, both of Cheyenne, were married at the courthouse yesterday afternoon by Judge William C. Mentzer. It notes that such ceremonies are rarely performed by the district court judge, with most marriages typically conducted by justices of the peace.
Funeral services for Mrs Leila Thompson were held at the Early- Bricker Brothers mortuary yesterday afternoon at 2 30 oclock. The Christian Science burial service was used. Mrs Thompson was the wife of W H Thompson of 210 West Highteenth street and formerly Miss Leila McNutt of this city.
Washington May 3 Senator Gore's measure to make robbery of federal reserve or member banks a federal as well as state crime was favorably reported today by the senate judiciary committee. It carries penalties from two to ten years and a $2000 fine with twenty five years for a second offense.
Police investigated a report of a man fallen from a second story window at the Dyer hotel alley. A woman said he vanished into the alley and fell, but the claim was denied. He showed signs of illness later attributed to a fit, not poisoning, and remained at the hospital with recovery incomplete.
Senator Kenyon of Iowa announced that Congress could not adjourn without passing meat packing regulation. The Grenna bill, a modified Kenyon Kendrick proposal, was brought to the Senate and then laid over for consideration.
George B. Gunther, a youth involved in the Dinneen garage robbery in this city, was sentenced by Judge William C. Mentzer to fourteen years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty. Judge Mentzer offered firm but kind counsel to the offender. Albert Robertson pleaded guilty to stealing a horse from Tom Gunston and other items from Sibylee country ranches but received no sentence at this time.
Mrs. Louella B. Ammon seeks 25000 in a district court suit against the Cheyenne Electric Street Railway for injuries alleged from alighting a street car on June 22, 1918. The trial before Judge Tidball featured early jury selection and testimony from Ammon and several witnesses, with defense counsel Thomas Hunter and Avery Haggard and prosecutors led by Hadley, Rinn, and Sampson.
In Butte Montana on May 3 the six hour day dispute between employers and the Butte Workingmen's Union moved to a strike vote after failed talks. Employers offered $5 for eight hours plus a 60 cent daily wage raise. The union includes unskilled laborers only.
Supporters of Senator Hiram Johnson of California abandon plans for a New Jersey presidential primary recount. A. C. Joy, eastern campaign manager, said Johnson agreed there is no chance of securing further recounts and the vote is a closed incident.
Thomas Hunter T J Bell and William F Storey were elected to the board of trustees of school district No 1 Laramie county. Hunter fills the unexpired term of John D Clark and Bell and Storey win three year terms. The district approved a 175000 annual appropriation with a 29000 building fund to be raised by a special tax raising the mill levy. Ballots counted show unanimous votes for the three candidates and broad support for the resolutions.
Hight Dutch steamship companies combine to form the United Dutch Navigation company backed by 200,000,000 guilders. The merger includes Holland American Line Royal Dutch Steamship Company Netherlands Company Java Ghina Japan Line Royal Pak et Company Rotterdam Lloyd Maas Navigation and Vannievelt Gouraraan & Co of Rotterdam.
Juarez renounces Carranza but will not join Sonora yet, issuing a neutrality pledge until a stable Mexican government is established. General Escobar at Juarez says allegiance will shift to the new government once formed. Mexico’s labor movement accuses Carranza foes of violence and arrests.
Juarez reports say Mexican federal customs officials were arrested by the Se?oristas who control the city. Money and papers seized. Mayor J Trinidad Romero and Police Chief Antonio Ruelas largely under arrest but free to move. Rebel troops nearing from Moctezuma expected tonight. Juarez quiet aside from a lone band and Obregon shout. Border briefly closed. Americans may cross again with caution.
Senator Lodge of Massachusetts, Republican leader, presented a declaration signed by prominent men expressing regret over President Wilson’s reflections on France and Italy. The document replies to Wilson’s remark that a militaristic party had gained power in France in relation to the Fiume question.
Official returns from twenty eight Montana counties show Hiram W Johnson with 10 453 votes for the Republican presidential nomination. Den by Governor Wood Lowden 8 519 Major General Wood 3 472 Herbert Hoover 2 444 and Warren G Harding 396.
The First Baptist Church raised its Interchurch World Movement quota plus 70 dollars after a spirited Sunday night meeting. The statewide goal was 414237.77 with 44299 raised. A. S. Jessup, county drive chairman, announced the figures yesterday. Golden Prairie church reported all but 107 of its 2265 quota, with full collection expected Sunday. The city’s colored Baptist church has not yet met its quota but work continues. expectations are high to push the drive over the line.
Washington dispatch reports Billings Montana in 1920 census with a population of 15 100, up from 9 ? for 1949 representing a 50.5 percent increase in the city’s size since 1949.
Water nine inches deep floods the Corlett school basement as sewer trouble and heavy snows push rising groundwater. City engineer plans to pump out the basement while plugging floor drains. A. S. Jessup appeals for assistance as schools remain closed.
