Newberry Sentenced to Two Years and $10000 Fine

Grand Rapids Mich March 20 Truman H Newberry junior United States senator from Michigan was convicted by a jury of conspiring in 1919 to violate election laws He was sentenced by Judge Clarence W Sessions to two years in prison and a $10000 fine released on bond pending appeal and said to retain his Senate seat unless otherwise decided by the Senate or Supreme Court Also sentenced were his brother John S Newberry and fifteen campaign managers with varying penalties including Paul H King and Frederick Cody of New York Charles A Floyd Detroit and George S Ladd received lesser or no fines The verdict followed a rapid trial with 68 of 85 defendants freed and 16 associates brought to court for sentencing The government moved to dismiss ten pleas of no contest and to discharge others with 90 days granted for appeals

Bar association acts to bar laymen from practicing law in Cheyenne

At a special meeting in the new district court room, Attorney Clyde M. Watts led a unanimous vote to form a three member committee to study preventing non attorneys from drafting wills contracts and abstracts. The plan may seek state bar action or a court ruling and cites a Cheyenne man paying a layman 40 dollars for a land contract later found invalid.
