A Springfield police incident reports a patrolman shot and a suspect fled as crowds gathered near city hall. National guard units were ordered to standby as tensions rose in the aftermath of the shooting in Ohio during early March.
Dr C Y Beard was targeted by a bold robbery attempt in Cheyenne as a male suspect and a woman accomplice weaponed and masked entered his car after a decoy call. Sheriff George Carroll arrested Harry McCoy and a woman posing as Mrs McCoy at the Plains hotel and Union Pacific roundhouse. The pair confessed to the crime with motive of robbery and faces further questioning.
Washington March 11 The senate confirmed the nomination of D R Criss er of Marion Ohio to be comptroller of the currency. The senate also confirmed several nominations by the president including Elmer D Ball to be assistant secretary of agriculture.
Forecast calls for snow and cold weather on Saturday in Wyoming followed by fair and mild conditions on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to remain chilly with light winds across the state.
In Iowell Wyoming on March 11 Mrs Matilda Waters shot and killed herself and four children and mortally wounded another and seriously wounded a sixth before using a revolver to complete her act An inquest returned a verdict of homicidal mania and death by own action Edith 11 survived and testified Paul 5 was unable to speak The weapon was a .38 revolver Waters 37 born Georgetown Ohio married to James Waters for 13 years She had threats of self harm since a baby’s death and was soon to be a mother again
Clara Smith Hamon on trial for the murder of Jake L. Hamon returned to the hotel room with the jury present and rearranged furniture from the night of the shooting. She listened intently as testimony quoted Hamon saying he was shot by her, while witnesses noted her tears and her widow daughter’s distress. The state linked a pistol purchase to Clara under another name, with medical testimony discussing Hamon’s liver disease and Hamon’s supposed dying statement.
Berlin leaders rally behind Doctor Simons as he opposes Allied demands at the Paris reparations talks. Entry of Doberhausen into the zone is reported without incident. In Silesia authorities suppress the Voters League activities. Dr Carl Helfferich criticizes Ignaz Simons for proposing annuities at the London talks.
Chicago March 11 Union leaders opposed wage cuts aimed at railways while executives argued reductions were needed to lower rates. J G Luhrs en urged Senate inquiry into railroad management after letters to Senator Cummins. Notices of proposed reductions on individual roads were anticipated.
A severe storm struck Homer Louisiana demolishing dozens of bar racks and an oil camp in Claiborne parish. One woman was killed and about 20 injured as communications failed between Shreveport and Homer. Another storm hit Doddsville near Ruleville Mississippi injuring several and damaging many buildings.
Alexander Kerensky, former Russian leader, says Russia must be allowed to determine its future as upheavals mirror 1917. He argues overseas interference is harmful and predicts overturn of dictatorship. In Petrograd reports show food control impacts and both sides seek rural support to sustain troops.
In Washington on March 11 the Supreme Court opened arguments on the Interstate Commerce Commission authority under the Transportation Act to supervise state rates. Wisconsin leads 48 states seeking to overturn a federal injunction against Chicago, Burlington & Quincy as states clash over inter state versus state rate setting.
The Department of Labor offers settlement efforts to avert a strike by packing house workers over proposed wage cuts. Secretary Davis sent telegrams to both unions and packers after conference with President Harding and urged each side to appoint two representatives to negotiate with labor agents. The arrest of Mr and Mrs H W Hyde in Denver area and the seizure of 81 quarts of bonded whiskey at Union Station were followed by today s confiscation of more than 100 quarts of barrel and bonded whiskey at Thermopolis Wyoming. Authorities also seized three stills an opium smoking outfit and a liquor laden automobile. Some liquor belonged to the Hydes and some to Thermopolis residents.
Kass City Mo March 11 The One Step was banned in Kansas City today as welfare officer N V Reichenerker issued regulations for public dance halls. The officer blamed the One Step as the father of all dance hall evils and said eliminating it would end close embrace dances like the Grizzly Bear and Toddle.
The first contingent of 800 miners and their wives arrived in Breslau from Duisburg to participate in the March 20 plebiscite on Upper Silesia. By noon, 10,000 eligible voters had registered in the Breslau district.
