Eight former Carranza army leaders held a secret conference with Governor Esteban Cantu in Mexicala Lower California after offering to lead Cantu forces against invading troops. The meeting followed their pledge to support the defender against the invaders.
Indianapolis dispatch reports more than half Indiana coal mines idle as day men strike, 195 Terre Haute mines closed with 25 000 workers idle and Evansville district down to six operable mines. Failure of coal supply threatens railway traffic amid widespread industrial paralysis.
The Mexican federal government will deploy all available troops into Lower California to subdue Governor Cantu who is said to be in revolt against the De La Huerta regime. General P Elias Calles, secretary of war and marine, stated this Thursday in Nogales Arizona.

Washington July 29 Chief Justice McCoy of the district court of Columbia supreme court dismissed the petition for a writ of mandamus to compel Secretary of State Colby to promulgate the congressional peace resolution vetoed by President Wilson and declare the United States at peace with Germany and Austria. Harry B. McCartney of Chicago filed the petition and noted an appeal to the district court of appeals and said he would seek a writ of certiorari to the US Supreme Court to transfer the case without waiting for the appellate action.

Grace Wilson was held on a $7,000 bond at a preliminary hearing in Winfield Kansas for the shooting death of her husband Homer Wilson known as a cowboy near the city last Sunday. Witnesses testified Wilson drove recklessly prompting a remonstrance from his wife. when the car stopped she refused to continue and, after a struggle, fired in self defense.
Detroit police pursue extradition for O. J. Fernandez in trunk murder case. Mrs. Eugene Leroy killed and body shipped to New York. Authorities consider Saltillo, Mexico, as location of the suspect who uses many aliases. Lieutenant J. P. Smith would verify identity in Saltillo if papers are approved.
Seventeen prisoners on the municipal farm overpowered two guards and fled across fields to a rail station. Fifteen pried their irons free and fled, leaving the guards shackled. Late Thursday two inmates remaining in leg irons were recaptured.
Martin Agnew, treasurer of H. C. Snyder Realty, and secretary of Lusk public school board, died Tuesday in Lusk Wyoming. Authorities believe overeating overripened olives at a luncheon caused his death.

Brent Dow Allison of Chicago, serving a five year term for draft evasion, was released by War Department order in Leavenworth. Convicted on refusal to respond to a draft call, his sentence was reduced from twenty five years and later commuted to five. He had worked in the American legation at Geneva and was arrested on military charges on returning from Liverpool. He would have been released in July 1922 with no good time. He drew transportation to Chicago after leaving the prison.
United States Senator James A. Reed announced that the senate sub committee would not resume its probe into presidential campaign expenditures until September. Reed is a member of the sub committee.
The State Department disclosed informal discussions with Britain over oil exploitation and distribution in mandate areas. A note to the British government aimed to clarify Britain’s intentions regarding Mesopotamian oil fields and possibly Balkan regions, conducted with Sir Auckland Geddes and the U.S. Embassy in London observing.
