Major General Leonard Wood declared he endorsed the Republican nominees while urging a progressive policy. He said the party must unite to gain the independent vote and outlined aims for a clean forward looking program including enfranchisement of women and a strong but conservative foreign policy. He spoke after a Marion meeting with Senator Warding and signaled willingness to shape the party’s platform.
Detroit July 12 Eugene Debs nominee of the Socialist party seeks a presidential pardon to campaign from Athinta federal prison where he serves a sentence for espionage law violations. The Socialist National Committee decided to appeal to President Wilson for Debs release after frequent prison visits by party leaders.
London reports Great Britain and Japan have notified the League of Nations they have prolonged their treaty allegiance for a year, noting the terms align with League principles.
The Allies issued an ultimatum to the German delegation at the conference, requiring delivery of 2,000,000 tons of coal monthly by 3 P.M. tomorrow or face enforcement of the treaty terms. In Paris, Leon Bourgeois urged full enforcement of the Versailles treaty to its last article.

West Palm Beach July 42 Judge Donnell ruled Richard Croker mentally competent to manage his affairs dissolving last March injunction sought by his son to bar Croker and stepmother from disposing of about 1 million dollars in property.
Merle R. Inkeep, a North Platte automobile salesman, pleads guilty to bigamy with a wife in North Platte and another in Monroe Michigan. He admitted plans to wed a Salt Lake City woman were interrupted by arrest last week. He also acknowledged courting a Cheyenne woman and gaining her acceptance by deception. He was sentenced to Nebraska penitentiary for one to seven years.
