Hard Shell Crab Near Extinction in East Philadelphia
July 6 report notes hard shell crabs nearly extinct in Philadelphia due to transportation delays high prices and labor shortages. Many young fishermen have joined military and munition plants, with Virginia capes as the former primary source. Crabs take four to six days to arrive and often only a dozen live crabs remain per barrel driving prices up. Soft shell crabs are on market but not plentiful. Curiously soft shells travel better even though they are less hardy.
